asking a question for a friend
A friend of mine has a 97 CTD with about 130K miles.
Just recently he has begun to loose oil. He just did an oil change- then took a trip (less than 1000 miles) and used 5 qts of oil. Noticed frothing in the oil...
head gasket?
cracked head?
turbo?
Anything common on this year truck that would signal something?
Thanks
Kutch

Hate to say but these trucks leak oil
many areas you can start at. The best thing to do tho, is pressure wash the entire engine and run the truck looking for leaks, Common places to check for leaks on these trucks.. Im still battling with my bottom end...
Oil pan gasket and screws (torque to 18 ft lbs, 10 mm socket)
Front timing cover (same specs)
Crank seal behind the balancer, dampener (replaced with TST kit for KDP)
Valve cover gaskets (tightened to 18 ft lbs as well)
O rings for screws for valve cover gaskets
Oil feed line to turbo can get loose on both ends
blowby can cause oil loss as well
Thats all i can think of for now...

Thanks.
I'm having a few trucks/ guys over this weekend. Going to do some gage installs on this friends 97 TD...Will take a closer look and see if anything stands out....
I guess I'd better get some big sheets of cardboard...I don't want all that oil all over the garage floor!!!!

Anybody think about what kind of oil he used? My buddy with a powerstroke decided to change his oil and use Castrol 10w40. He checked his oil about 1 month later and was 8 Qts low! Make sure you use a reputal oil like delo, delvac,or my favorite Rotella.
