a 24v stud kit has all the same length studs except for the 6 outside the valve cover, a 12v kit has a different length stud every other set, I don't have a 12v so I do not know why they are different length, but I know that is the difference in the two sets. But a 247-4202 is definitely not for a 12v or a 1st gen.

The 247-4202 is for the 24v engine and the 247-4203 is for a 12v engine. These engines have different stud length requirements due to the differences in the heads......

The 12V has a pedestal mounted set of rocker arms and therefore has one long bolt per cylinder.

The 24V does not have a similar setup.

247-4202 is for the 98.5 - 2002 24 valve engine.

247-4203 is for 89-98 12 valve engines.

I believe the "new" 4203's require machining the rocker boss down .200 where as the original 12 valve studs did not but some hit the valve cover and caused sealing issues with the cover. So the fix was to shorten the stud which requires the rocker boss to be machined down.

Just doesn't make sense to me to take a situation that your average DIYer could fix (remove the ribs in the valve covers) to having to now find a machinist (or atleast a mill) to remove .200 from the pedestal. Oh well.
