APPS = Accelerator Pedal Position Sensor.

You have a grid heater (unless someone disconnected it) and I would say yes you do need one.

sure you aren't asking about a block heater Keith? they can come in handy if ya like a bit of a warmer ride when you get in it in the winter, but i plugged mine in first year, didn't bother after that, never a problem starting and I always go out plowing, so cold weather is not a factor for starting, just heater function in a more timely manner. IMHO

no, the grid heater it is under the intake manifold. i want the GDP manifold but they recomend the Pro-Flo Grid Heater Replacement Block more air more power. if you go on there site the pics of the grid heater look very restrictive.

what does the apps do, my buddy has an 05 and he dosent have it?

The manifold you want to get do not give you an off the seat perforamnce upgrade like you are thinking unless you are going over 500-600 hp they are mainly for looks. Your post shows you in the NJ area and wouldn't deleate your grid heater leaving up there. I have the banks manifold set-up on mine and can not tell a difference from stock to it but it sure does look good when you pop the hood.

the grid heater cycles once your truck gets under 60* it allows your truck to start in cold enviroments with very little smoke by warming the intake air tempature just like other diesel trucks with glow plugs. Better system and cheaper to maintain. Any place that has weather below freezing is a must have for quick starts. You could disable it and use your block heater to help with quick starts but would leave the heater in. I live in texas and could get away with it but there is no gains in it for a daily driver truck.

I may be wrong, but I would be surprised if an '05 doesn't have this.

Every CTD has an APPS. Early years were called a TPS (throttle position sensor), but it is the same animal! The early 3rd gens were mounted under the hood like the older trucks ( 1st and 2nd gens) and the later 3rd gens are under the dash. But I can tell you any CTD that has any sort of a computer has some way of telling that computer the angle of the throttle ( or pedal ) !

Im not saying I dont have a throttle position device, im just saying I dont have the large black box in the engine bay mounted in front of the intake horn.(APPS)
Not sure why some do/dont have it, maybe its a early 05 vs late 05 thing(assuming 03/04s didnt have the engine mounted box)

There are many, many CTD's out there without an APPS. They didn't used to be all computer controlled you know.

What he's getting at is that all the 3rd gens have them. Some are mounted on the engine and others I think on the accelerator pedal. It's the same thing either way.

And if you wil carefully re-read my post it said if it has any computer, it has a device to tell the computer what the throttle or pedal position is. My first statement was a little broad, yes there were some without it, but they were all 1st gens.
