Angry Anyone have problems programming Sentry key?

I purchased a couple of extras, and was able to get one programmed but not the other one. I went by the directions in the book and also tried the directions that came with the keys. I even went so far as to call a locksmith to verify that I was doing right (I was).

Anyone else have a problem?

When you programmed the second key, I believe you need to insert the last key you programmed, then go through the programming procedure with the last key.

Little confused with your wording. I've tried it everyway possible and nothing is working.

I got two cheap Sentry keys on ebay & was able to program both of them after a couple of tries. I used the enclosed instructions. But it took a couple of tries. i think you can have 6 or 8 keys programed. Maybe one key is bad??
Have you got a chance to ask who you bought them from?

Arrow Keys

Follow the manual from Dodge.....start with stock key first......then second stock key......then new key. Same procedure for any number of keys just repeat steps.

Doesn't work. As a matter of fact, the instructions in the manual don't work as stated. I now forgot what I did to get the first spare key programmed, but it wasn't via the manual's directions. This is ridiculous.

When you program your keys are you programing them one at a time, or all at once?
Normally, you can program your keys all at once. So long as you do not exit out of the customer learn program. On some dodges you must have all keys availiable to program at that time otherwise the ECM will not accept the key.
In order to program new keys you must have at least two keys that the ECM knows and you must be quick about placing them into the lock cyclinder in under the three to seven seconds that is specified in the Owners Manual.

Have you look in your owners manual and tried the procedure in it?
I have noticed some differences in the aftermarket steps compared to the Owners Manual. So just follow the Owners manual.

I would post the service manual instructions, but I am on my laptop and need to check out of the hotel soon.

Chipped Key.

My programing with the e-bay chipped key went perfect except for the grind True Value did for my key. It only works in one position, not 180* off. They used a new accurate key tracing machine and deburred it at the end and everything. I've got one more and think I may go to the locksmith at the Swap Meet and have him do it with his stone age equipment!

I had trouble too. I called the guy that sells the keys on Ebay--Good guy by the way. He immediately knew what to do. In the process it says to look for something to flash, that was the problem. There was a different icon to watch to flash instead. Or it was more time to flash....something like that. I forget which one was the correct one. If the ebay guy sold it to you, he includes a phone number. Call it. 5 minutes later i was done. He is a Pro Key Maker, a real company. PM me and we could prob figure it out together....

I know this may sound dumb, but what color are your keys?

On my 05 the keys have a gray cover/ramhead if they have the Sentry System. Otherwise the keys with the black/ramhead cover are not Sentry Keys.

I have seen some 06 keys advertised that look like mine with the gray cover except they do not have the keyless door remote mounted to the key. This is just a plain grey covered key with the RF Transmitter for the Sentry Key System. Now remember, if the keys are black then they are not Sentry Keys and you have now been a victim of fraud.

According to the owners manual the 06 Sentry Keys have a chip included on the back side of the circuit board of the keys with the keyless door remote attached to them. The keys These are the keys you need to have to program your new keys.

Here are the steps to do so. These step are pretty close to the step I had to do on my 05 except my truck would chime.

1. Obtain at least two valid keys of the Original Sentry Cut Keys for the vehicle. These may have the remote fob on the key.
2. Obtain a new blank Sentry (Gray Cover) Key and cut to match original key or ignition lock cylinder. These may not have the remote fob on the key.
3. Insert one of the Valid Sentry Cut keys into the lock ignition lock cylinder and turn the key to the on/run position. Do not start the vehicle.

4. Count to three Seconds, but no more than fifteen and turn the key to off and remove the key. Now, before fifteen more seconds insert the second valid Sentry key and turn the key to the on position. Remember, Do not start the truck.
5. Count to ten seconds and look for the security light to flash. Which will indicate that you have entered the Customer Learn Program. (This is where my truck would chime.)
6. After the the light starts to flash, remove the second valid sentry key and insert the non-valid key (blank key) and turn the blank key to the on position.
You must do this in one minute after entering the customer learn program.
7. Wait for the security light to stop flashing and stay on solid for three seconds and then go out. (This should be about ten seconds after you have switched the blank key to the on position.) You have now programed the blank key and left the Customer Learn Program.
8. Now, turn the key off. Wait ten seconds and then try to start the truck with the key. Repeat the above procedures for each additional key.

Only eight valid keys can be program into the Sentry System.

I believe that the security light was not the correct light. I believe I watched for the check enging light...whichever light it was. you DEFINETLY had to wait longer for the trucks brain to acknowlegde BEFORE the next step

When I was doing this, the security lights that were to flash as stated in the book, never did work as described.
I probably used all my coding allotments to get the one key to work. I still have two more to try

I am just saying what was printed in my PDF file copy of the 2006 DR-Truck Service Manual under Section 8Q with the heading "Vehicle Theft Securtiy"; with a subheading "Customer Learn Method", page 8Q-77 - 8Q-78. You must remember when turning your keys in the ignition to the "on/run" position your instrument cluster will do a bulb check before entering the customer learn program and if you are not watching closely you may miss the light. The light is on for only three seconds unless in a command program. I also read in another main section with the heading "Instrument Cluster" that the Security Bulb/Light is located in the lower right quadrant between the speedo and the coolant temperature gauge on the 2006 model year truck. This bulb may also be disabled if the truck does not have the Vehicle Theft Security System even thought the instrument cluster will still have the security indicator as standard equipment. The security indicator is a round diameter opaqe cutout in the instrument cluster and is lit by a red LED Bulb. It is the light that flashes when you lock your doors with the key fob and your can see at night blinking every now and then when walking by the truck at night. So, if you do not have this light it may be disabled. I will have to check and see if my Father In-law Mega Cab has this light. It might be as simiple as the indicator light not being turned on.

On another note. My 05 owners manual said to lock the seat belt to avoid confusion with the chime for the door or the seat belt chime. This might be a step that Arkapigdiesel has not tried yet. So, maybe you have to have your seat belt on.

As for the time it takes to get into the Customer Learn Program, I did not notice how long or short it was. I just counted to one-thousand one, one-thousand two, one-thousand three, one-thousand four, etc.....

Shawn
