Anyone have the door panel off?

Does anyone know what kind of protection is around the door speakers? I have one that starts spitting and cutting out when it rains. I figure it's because it's getting wet, and I wonder if there is any kind of protection in the door for the speakers.
If not, when I get new ones I will get come of those speaker cups that, whille they are for acoustics, have a side affect of being water-proof.

Thanks,
Chris

I'm going off of memory, but I don't think there is any protection. If anything, a sheet of plastic. I know there is plastic sheeting on the bottom of the door (under the panel). Good idea about putting the backing in there. Just make sure you have enough clearance with the window mechanisms. Good luck, Kevin

Chris,

There really is no protection from the speaker getting wet. I don't know alot about speakers, but I thought that they were semi-water proof anyway.(I guess that could be like sort-a-pregnant???) Anyway, sounds like you have a bad speaker. The only thing that I would make sure is that you replace the vapor/plastic barrier under the door panel. It'll at least keep the cab dry.

I've ripped the plastic out of both my doors. Haven't had a problem with rain yet (and it's been raining hard non-stop for 2 days here) and haven't had a problem with wet speakers (I've got components). Had the truck for almost 55K and haven't had a problem with the speakers getting wet. Stock or other wise.

Bigblue, what kind of speakers are in your doors? I had Infinity Reference series recommended to me. I suppose I will put 6.5" speakers in there.
You say you have component speakers, did you have to do any mods to fit them? I don't think I need component in this situation since I have the Infinity system in my truck already.
What do you think?

The factory infinity system is garbage IMO. If you have that then it will not be as easy as just replacing the speakers. The amps are attached to the back of the front door speakers. There should be a small shroud over the speakers in the door. At least there was on mine.

DANG!!!! I heard someplace that there are amps on the speakers.

So I need to buy an amp too? This is getting to be a big deal, just for changing out a bad speaker. I will look and see if any aftermarket Infinities have an amp on them.
Thanks for the info, Stake.

Thanks,
Chris

Those are some nice speakers. Had those in there before I got my Polk's (don't ask, really bad deal). The only thing I did was take some like 1/16" board of some sort and make a little backing plate to cover up the 6x9 hole it was filling. That was about it. The other mod I did was I drilled a hole in my door to mount the speaker (again don't ask, I was "forced" to do it this way instead of mounting them in the pillars). I highly recommend components. I have yet to hear a speaker as clear as a set of components. I recommend putting an amp on them as well to get the best sound you can out of them.

Big Blue:
What was the purpose of tearing the plastic out of the door panels? I thought is was to provide protection for the window and realted parts. Is it not needed?

Stamey:
The oem speakers do have amps on them. I replaced my system and the speakers had the amps and the plastic was still on the doors. If you can make mine work, they worked well when I took them out. I have all 6. I installed the Alpine unit with a 10" woofer.

I don't understand what the purpose of the plastic is for. The windows and stuff are pretty isolated from any damage. Come to think about it, maybe I only ripped enough of it out to mount the speakers and the crossovers. Who knows.

I chunked the Infinity system and basically abandoned the whole stock set up. I ran new heavy duty wiring to every speaker and installed two amps, one four channel for the four and one two channel for the 10 inch DVC on the back seat.
I may still have the stock infinitys laying around somewhere. Don't remember much protection other than the vapor barrier.
Remind me Saturday and I'll show you how it works.

Thanks Joel, and everyone who has responded. Joel, if you can dig up one of them Inifinities, I'd appreciate it.
I haven't decided where I'm gonna go with the stereo. I used to be heavy into that stuff, but now it isn't such a big deal because I have the music coming off that Cummins to listen to. The stock system is OK, mainly because I can still hear the engine over it if I get down on it.
