Yea I don't know if I would base alot on it. We are very rich in minerals there is alot of money here. Of course with minerals the time could always end.

Re:Anyone a Diesel Mech?
The mines pay really well. You earn it, though.
I as/was/sort of still a diesel wrench...moving out of the shop to the "office" but keep getting sucked back in lately to help with the 6.0L disasters. :
A good heavy equipment mechanic can make very good money like was said above. If you don't want to be outside plan on a little less, but its still a good living.
I wrenched on log trucks and heavy equipment before I went to Wyoming Tech--after that I was a KW/Volvo/Ford tech, now am a service advisor/warranty administrator/tech at a Ford dealer.
A major back injury and subsequent surgery keeps me away from the big stuff now--I miss it. :-[
Depending on your talent level and what you want to work on, anything from 40,000 to 100,000 is easy to make as a diesel wrench.
..and there's not many jobs as fun, either. ;D

Re:Anyone a Diesel Mech?
Diesel mechanics pay ranges from $10.00 per hour to $25.00 per hour....skill defines your pay range....I have been a diesel mechanic for 30 years and a diesel shop Service Manager for 7 years....hiring a good diesel mechanic is gettin harder since there are not alot of new people entering this field of work...Its heavy-dirty-hot-work but its very rewarding knowing you can fix over the road trucks (which deliver almost everything we use)
The average diesel line mechanic will earn $25-35000.00 per year not including overtime pay
A average diesel mechanic has a major investment in tools also.....my tool box and tools has an insured value of $90000.00 but I own special engine tools the average mechanic doesnt have

Pay is not everything. If you are not in good physical shape now forget it. The job is very demanding on your body. Worked 15 years in the trade, left to go to construction. Not near as battered as I was working on vehicles. It is a very rewarding job if you can stand the flat rate crap that goes on. Good luck.

Re:Anyone a Diesel Mech?
i'm currently going to Wyotech for diesel (and business). right now, there was 60,000 jobs in the field of diesel mechanics that are waiting to be filled right now. finding a good company isn't hard, but most places you simply work to make good money. and with good knowledge, a wanting to learn more, and good working ethics will give you a very financially stable career.

Re:Anyone a Diesel Mech?
oh yeah, Im in good shape. I enjoy it ( father owns a farm) Thats what got me started in it. My brother told me about some visitor to his HS , Something about UTI, I go to WIT in Iowa, Western Iowa Tech. Maybe shoulda thought about UTI or Wyotech butdidnt. Im just kinda getting a idea for it. I know one guy him and a friend opened a shop and they just get the hourly charge for what they do and then they support the shop. Talked to a peterbuilt repair the other day said starting out at 12-16 depening on experience, and like said on here i heard upwards to close to 100k. So i had so many diffrent things im like WHOA i wanna get into sometihng profitable. For 10 bucks a hour i can go work in the Mall haha. well 8 anyway. But then again i dont plan on working for someone else all too long. So who knows. Thankyas all

Re:Anyone a Diesel Mech?
I was accepted into Linn State Technical College foe the fall. Just finished my first week today. We have MHT (Medium Heavy Truck), CAT service program, and HET (Heavy Equipment Technology). I was going to go into the CAT program but decided I did not want to be specialized. If I am not mistaken they are 1 of 5 schools in the nation that have a CAT service program. The HET program is what I decided to go into. And is ranked one of the best in the nation also.
I am going to have a 16 week internship in the summer. And the internship will pay $16 an hour.
So far so is great I am learning a lot and really enjoy class. I will finish with a associates degree in HET.
Here a pic to give you an idea of what we will work with. Some of this stuff is almost unreal. It is great. -Anthony
