Im thinkin about getting an aftermarket bumper. Is anybody running the HERD bumpers??

I really like these; company man drove his truck to location the other day and had one (05 Dodge) and looked great. Where do I get one (Emailed the company looking for a dealer but havent heard back from them), and anybody know about how much they run?? Thanks

It took them about a week to respond back to me via Email. Bumper was about 2 grand or somewhere in that area.

You could also look at these. They are also made in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. http://www.aliarc.com/pickupbars.html They are quite a bit less expensive.

Both companies make bumbers and moose bars for big rigs, and their pickup units are the little brothers. I have seen examples of both, and they are very nice units if you like the trucker look.

Looks like it, but alas it is nowhere near the same in quality. I checked the Herd bumpers out and decided not to go that route - they vibrate a lot with that fold forward hinged mechanism.

Do not buy an AliArc! Although their OTR truck bumpers have performed well, they are lacking in construction and design for the pickups. I've inspect these up close as well. I found them to be:

1) built from 1/4" aluminum instead of 3/8"
2) they do not protect the bottom of your rad / intercooler because they don't drop down far enough
3) if you hit a coyote, they fall apart

My brother had one on his Chebby and hit a small deer. It folded up like an accordian and still caused major damage to his truck.

Since installing the one pictured above last January, I've taken two deer, and one Hyundai - it still looks like it does in the pic - no repairs to anything.

My vote is what Festus has...I have one too. Much better built aluminum bumper then any other I looked at.

I didnt realize the Herd tilted forward on the pickups...still really like it. Dont like the looks of the AliArc, and Im not about to put an ugly bumper on my truck!! The others I have looked at, they look like pretty well built units, and look good enough. Thanks for the links/pics...keep em comin-would still like an opinion from someone thats put on some miles with the Herd on their pickup if anybody has one???

Take a look at the ARB Combination bumper for these trucks.

I have gotten more compliments on it than any other I've seen. It's stout, has a winch mount, 3" tubular sections, was cake to install, and has some really nice beefy mounting brackets that are boxed, sliding over the framerail! It's also made with a recessed winch mount, and is designed to improve the approach angle on the front of the truck, which few of these aftermarket bumpers address.

I just bought one, delivered to the door truck freight for $1400, AND from 4 wheel parts, I got a warranty so that if I ever crunch it while out wheeling, I get a new one free, no questions asked!! Cost $100 bucks extra, but you can't beat that.

Herd and Ali-arc are both PACCAR companies.

Yeah, the same outfit that builds those less than high quality trucks called " peterbilt" and "kenworth"

Pricing is close to the same on both, however, on the OTR trucks, the Herd is a slightly better bumper, in the Road Train model.

Excelagaurd makes a neat bumper for sure, well constructed, however, a little too "bling" for my tastes.

ARB makes a good steel bumper, the price isn't totally out to lunch, and they will take a hit. That said, i still don't have one. HAH.

Best thing is to get as many opinions as possible, then choose accordingly.

I have a Denver Offroad Alum bumper. It has been great. Been on the truck over 200k now. Still looks good. Layne does a great job uses 3/8 and 1/2 inch. Just a few months ago hit a deer doing 65mph. Hit it pretty square and there was zero damage.

I am soory to say this and i don't mean to offend anyone but those alum bumpers look like crap, it looks like they used someones old lawn furniture and tent poles to cobble up somthing to look like a bumper or maybe you drove thru an awning at 70 mph and this is what stuck to the front of your truck
how much protection is alum going to give you anyway? how much are you paying for these alum bumpers?
put your money into a nice steel bumper, the first accident you get into with a quality bumper you will see how itwill save your truck

And I have seen many many results of aluminium bumpers after collisions with cars, moose, elk, buffalo, etc.

Those flimsy lightweight bumpers save a heck of a pile of damage. Yes, they will deflect to some extent, but when the difference is a $3000 bumper vs 30k in repairs to the front of your rig, I'll vouch for what the bumper can take.

The other day, a herd bumper on the front of a W900L took the brunt of a front corner impact with an adult buffalo. The collision occurred at about 45 MPH, as the driver had seen the animal, and was slowing rapidly.

He took the animal on the drivers corner, and the bar didn't even deflect to the leading edge of the hood. Now, those are NOT built for hits like that, they are built to take a head on shot. I think it did fine.

Steel is simply too heavy for most real world applications. The front of a dodge is heavy enough without the added couple hundred pounds.

On a big truck, weight is an issue, lower tare = greater payload. So unless you are running a 20k front end, with wide base tires, you have to keep the weight down somehow. Tinfoil stock bumpers vs roo-bars. I'd take the roo bar every time.

Just another uninformed opinion.
