Any one running Propane

I am looking into running propane, for power and mpgs. possibly running lower EGTs wouldnt be bad either. all i know now is that Bully Dog makes a kit that is "easy" and i am looking for some input/experiances

I'm new here, but I have run propane on my 2000 dodge diesel for a couple of years, I use a simple vapor system, tank, electric propane switch, directly to a regulator, then 3/8 inside diam. hose into the air intake sys, I have a pressure switch on my intake set at 15 Lbs boost, so its only on when pulling hard, I also have a switch on the dash to turn it all off if I want to, I have an Edge juice chip, 4" exhaust & cold air intake, I think the propane probably gives me something like 50 extra horses, I can certainly tell when it come on.

what type of mileage gains do you get?

thinking of buying a bullydog propane setup
is it worth it for mileage gains?

Those kits are pretty expensive, If you can get a used propane tank for a van camper, something about 10" in diameter, (they can be hard to find) the rest of the system would only cost about $75.00, this of course would be the vapor sys. the bullydog would, I believe be a liquid sys, which would probably double the amount of propane that I put into my engine, as far as lowering exhaust temps, it dose initially, but under full throttle my egt has been as high as 1400 degrees, that's taking the temp on the exhaust manifold right before the turbo, as far as adding mpg, probably some, but remember you are adding cost by using the propane, I will probably use 10 gal. in about 4 or 5 trips to the beach (150 miles one way) through the mountains & I normally don't even turn it on until I reach the big hills, then its only used as long as the boost is over 15 psi, never found a hill yet that I coulden't pull in 3 rd. gear pulling my 11,400 lb. 5th wheel.
It just gives me a little extra edge when passing those fords & chevys.

Do you have a auto-kill switch on the propane tank? Thats the only thing that keeps me away from making my own system. They look pretty easy to make. Forklift propane tanks work good also.

No kill switch, the electric solenoid is the only shut off for the system, except the service valve on the tank, I think if the electric solenoid failed it woud fail in the off position, thats its normal position.

OK did purchase the Bully Dog propane kit with tank... have done a butt load of research figuring out how things work.

Bully dog has two major differences from home made kit below.

1. a pressure switch is wired in series with electric selenoid that controls gas. on turbo engines a low pressure switch is used to sense boost pressure. it's set at approx 7lbs. which can be adjusted

2. late model Bully Dog regulator uses engine coolant to evaporate any liquid that accidentally gets to regulator. early Bully Dog regulators were not equipped with engine coolant feature.

one needs to make sure only vapor is delivered to regulator. propane tanks are marked at valve for vapor or liquid. internally dip tube are placed to deliver vapor of liquid. Top tank position will be marked.

Bully Dog propane systems uses vapor only.

tank has to be oriented position marked. supplying liquid to your engine will end up doing major damage. including melting pistons.

there's too many negative feedback posted on folks destroying their engines using propane to gain HP. instead of mileage.

My truck is stock, except for exhaust, and propane.Have ran it since about 5k. Over 100k now No EGT issues here, mileage gains are about 7 mpg, net gains about 3 mpg. (meaning including the cost of the propane)

I have read that....some good info but it gets lost from one guy with an agenda, and another guy with way too much time on his hands!!
Homemade systems are dangerous....and when something goes wrong, with their invention, propane is bad.....not the fact that they cut corners, or had no control. The thing is there are many people and now fleets, running propane fumigation safely and effectively, that do not post on forums. Just out enjoying their trucks. A happy consumer tells 5 people, an unhappy one tells 50 and guess which one talks the loudest and whose story is more interesting to hear.
