It's been a few years now since the new CJ- oils came out. The forcast was for doom and gloom on the flat tappet engines; soooooo..............does anybody have some data to look at or did everybody stock up on the old CI-4plus stuff. My stock is getting low and would like to know what to do to keep my fleet up and running. I've always used Delo but I'm looking at the Rotella 5W-40 stuff.

i use 15w40 rotella in my ram and havent seen a difference at all.

I run Shell Rotella 5W40 synthetic with no problems in my 24v and my 12v. From what the word is around here its the best bang for the buck on a synthetic oil.

People hate change, so I'm sure thats where the CJ concerns came from. The 6.7 is still a flat tappet engine anyway.

I use high zink motercycle 20w50 oil in the summer. and 5w40 rotella winter

I haven't noticed a difference in over 75k miles on my Dodges and four 55 gallon drums of 15w40 Delo CJ on the farm equipment.
From my reading the CJ oil should be better since it's designed to hold more soot in suspension.

Well I had some gloom and doom on my flat tappet motor.. and this was using the old oils. I used delvac rotella and valvoline's 15-40 conventional diesel oils for the older application and over a period of 20k mi or so my hamilton cam ate itself.
Now I -do- have an aftermarket cam and springs, but even the old application oils have lower zinc content than they did. So its anyones guess which was the contributing factor. No one told me to run a ZDDP additive until too late.
Im assuming this move to reduce zinc was driven by environmental concerns or something? Wish I could make someone at the EPA or whatever pay for this expensive repair =(
Thanks to Zach Hamilton for warranty'ing the cam even though it wasnt his fault.

Run an oil analysis every oil change if youre worried. They can look for traces of wear metals.

the ci4+ oils are available everywhere. they can no longer package them in quart or gallon containers. they are in 5 gallon and 55 gallon drums go to shivron distributor to get it. the dello 15w-40 cj4 has LE after it for low emissions the ci4+ does not.

Sort of, the zinc plugs the new diesel cat converters.

I've been using Delo 15w40 in everything I own including gassers for 30 years with no problems but from recent reading it appears the CJ oil is really bad for gassers.
Apparently the the CJ oil is highly detergent and will wash the lube right off the cylinder walls of a gasser but not a diesel.
Guess I'm going to have to stock one more brand...

i think it is the dpf filter rather than the cat. but you need to do the deletes anyway. that is what we did so we only have to keep the ci4+ oil

Crap!..............that's a little disturbing but thanks for the great link. Some excellent info on it.

How cold does it get where you are? I didn't think 15W-40 was good for much below 20F.

The majority of our winters are above 25°F with typically less than two weeks under 20°.
When it does get below 20° it's usually way below zero.
I use an oil pan heater then rather than keep two different kinds of oil on hand.
