Any 1st genners with Subaru experience?

I know this isn't about a 1st gen, but I'd rather hear from the members I've known for years than the other guys.

Well, Ive been looking to find Dallas a car for a while and we've looked at tons of Honda's and Toyota's but none of them felt "right." There was always a few little things that put me off and made me not want to spend my hard earned money on it. That changed today.

My cousin works at an Infiniti dealership and told me he just had someone trade in a 2002 Subaru Outback. It has 137,xxx miles on it, auto tranny (good for Dallas, she can't drive a stick) and I personally think it looks pretty slick. I took it for a test drive today and I absolutely fell in love. The car drove perfectly, the tranny shifted nice, the engine felt nice and the car drove very well, it had a very smooth ride.

The car is listed at $4,950 but I was told by my cousin he could get it down to $4k out the door. It seems like a good deal to me (considering many Honda's we looked at were asking that much with 60-70K more miles) but I'm not very knowledgeable about these cars or engines.

From everything I've read the 2.5L engine is supposed to be very reliable, get pretty good fuel mileage and fairy cheap to maintain. I'm looking for some first hand experience form people I trust before I go and spend 4K on a car that will turn out to be a pile, and expensive to maintain.

Here is a link to the car.

Thanks for any help.

i've owned an 05 outback and traded it for an 09 forrester. The 2.5 is a great little engine; Only thing I've ever had to do with either of them was maintence. Both averaged around 27 mpg with a 5 spd. Both treated me well; Now if Subaru would sell their diesel in the U.S. ....

I left toyota to work at a vw/subaru dealer 2 months ago and so far I like both better. The tdi is an awesome car. And the Subaru's are pretty good to the 2.5 boxer motors are way different but it seems like as long as the maintenance is done very few issues make sure the t belt, water pump oil pump are done head gaskets to. And the clutches in the central diff. If it feels like it binds in reverse.

OK Parker... here we go. My wife and i owned a 2000 outback limited which is the next size up from the impreza, same engine, trans, but heaver and longer, mine was loaded to the hilt.

we bought it off of ebay in Dallas TX drove over 1,000 miles to get it.
it was the same green as this car but tan on bottom with tan leather int.
it had 123,000 when we got it, right after i got home i had to change a head gasket on the driver side, but i did it myself in a day, not a big deal.
after that never never a problem at all.

a great car
almost unstopable in the snow/ice very very safe.
on avg hwy 30 mpg you should get better with the lighter impreza.
on avg town 24 mpg lots of stop and go.
great on tires.
high ground clearance for straddling stuff on the road ( tires, road kill, )
lots of room in the back.
great for getting kids in a car seat in the rear.
the fastest heater i ever saw.
great A/C
awsome comfort to us (were not big people)

the long and short is we gave 6,500 drove it 75,000 miles trouble free with exception of the head gasket, got hit in the rear at about 30 mph no air bags went off the only thing it done was break all the fasteners that held on the bumper cover, fixed it myself no paint damage, sold it for 4,500 with 198,000 miles to a guy local who is still driving it, that was 3 years ago.

we bought an 03 VW jetta TDI 5spd loaded also, as soon as it's paid off or we get sick of it we will own another Subaru Outback.

thats what my experience was, i'm shure there are some bad stories but mine is not.

and believe it or not i just bought the paint for my truck and it's the same color as that car and the same as my old one, Timberline green metalic, that way when i buy another one it will match my truck.

I keep hoping for the US to bring over the Subaru diesel but not as of yet.

I have as much faith in a Subaru as i do my cummins.

hope this helps Parker and family.
