anti rust

i was talkin to a buddy today about those anti rust magnet deals you put under your cabs.
Are these things legit? i mean it makes sense but how come ive never heard of it? he says he'll sell me one for fifty bucks if they've still got it layin around.

and he also said if i had one insurance would cover the damages done by rust in the areas that magnet protects. any experience on that?

thanks guys

There are such things as sacrificial zinc annodes that they used to use on trucks, but metallurgy has come a long way since then. They do still use them on boats though, mainly outboard engines. You could try it and let us know how you got on.

I have big zincs on my boat and that is to let the electrolysis eat the zincs and not my rudder, wheel, cage, coolers, ect. They are for a submerged type of service. The electrolysis comes from lots of different metals in the salt water. Makes a battery basically when different types of metal are submerged. Don't suspect it would have any effect on shore.

I find that hard to believe... I am an uneducated man myself, but I know a lot of things about a lot of things.... unfortunately most of them are meaningless!
