another head light switch overload ?????

hey all, just wondering if anyone can chime in on this....

so i burnt out the headlight switch.....through research i have found this to be quite common...due to an overload on the system of lights,wires,and switch....

i have found that there is a recall....http://dodgeram.info/tsb/recalls/819.htm

geee go figure it doesnt apply to me....so heres the question....does anyone know the part number for a replacement switch and the wireing config. to add a relay to prevent this.....or does dodge have the relay bundle that is supplied in the recall avaiable for 2nd gen 98.5-02.....

any help before i go and get bent over by dodge??????

Replace the switch (eBay works well), and then take any accessories and put them on your own circuit. You *should* be good to go if you do all that.

nice....and the switch lists for 58 at the local dodge.....quite possible to be out the door for under a hundo!!!!!!!!

do you run this set-up??? and if so..hows the install????

Have you tried your local parts store for the switch? as old as the unit is they might have one, as for the install I have not done it yet(still working on the bed for the new Sterling 5500) From what I've read here on DTR it is a piece of cake unplug/plug.. I am going to updates the lights on the 05 with this kit when I get a chance as I hate things that go bump in the night..

I had that wiring harness on my 96. Make a big difference in lighting, but I can't comment on whether my wiring circuit really benefited or not?

The thicker gauge wire has less loss due to resistance, which in turn means more juice to el bulbos.

copy that.....

as well if it is larger wire and less resistance...well we all know what resistance equals...HEAT...and if that is the case PROBLEM SOLVED...no more burnt out switch-ie.....gonna order it up on monday.

That light relay kit has a separate relay for the high and low beam .. that will drop the amp load off the back side of the light switch, as all it will do is turn on the respective relay(less than 1 amp draw) - The relay gets it "load" power directly from the battery..

Have had mine installed for several years now and no problems. Easy install and, as said, it takes the load off the switch. After install of a new switch and the relay kit you don't need to worry about it any more. I removed the solder links provided with the kit I got and installed two fuses. Easier to replace a fuse on the road than a fuseable link!

hi
i have the one from summit racing looks the same .just installing the harness with no other changes made the lights brighter !

then i added some flosser 9104 100/80 watt bulbs and got another improvment in light output !

then added a dode to the plug from headlight not used and now i have high and low on together when i select high beam !

o say can you see now!!!

i have some extra flossers if you want some pm me .

thanks for the offer on the lights...i may take you up on that in the near future...i am running into that classic dodge haze on the lights...i got it pretty bad on one and the others not so much its only a year and a half old....so i may re-do the front lights sometime soon...

hey carl.....NICE idea...i agree fuzes are easier to replace....so i am gonna follow that que!!!!

I had the haze on the lights also. Used 2000 wet paper, very wet, then medium rubbing compund with a wool bonnet. Works well but I forgot to seal them up with clear coat so will need it again pretty soon. They will haze again if not sealed up. Replaced bulbs with 9004+30, for a little more output. Could not get the Flossers at the time.

got the LMC harness, Got the new switch...installed it today....presto,pringo,blamo...wallla-ka-zamo....LET THERE BE LIGHT.....thanks guys...for all the help...that realay harness for 29.00 bucks cant be beat...sure takes the fun (ha-ha) out of making one yourself...

so now all i need to do is dial in the beam and make sure my head lights arnt pointing one to left field and one to right field and then i am good to go.....

if i wasnt to do a head lamp complete change out...what blubs do you all recommend...i mean i probally will do a head lamp change out and incorporate clear corners...maybe cuz its a striped white truck i will do the blacked out head lamps with blacked out side markers.....any who what do you all think???

and again....thanks for the links and suggestions....

ps...total time for install (with out directions, which does suck, cuz i first tried to go under and through the void space in the bumper...) was about 1 hour...not to bad...once i figured the lenght was cut to go over the fan shroud just like the passenger side battery..... i probally could have saved about 15 minutes.
