Okay guys, Ive got a 97 GMC 3/4 ton with the 6.5 turbo diesel in it. Recently rebuilt. it runs out very well and does what i want it to do, but when i was in the local junk yard this weekend. i saw sitting there a 96 dodge 2500 with no markings on it, so i popped the hood and there was a cummins 12 valve. I looked at the odometer and it said 23000 but the motor was real shiny and recently painted like it was rebuilt. I had a pretty bad hit to the back so i guess the insurance company totaled it. Now i went and talked to the guys at the yard and they said the motor is mine for 400 bucks as long as i pull it out. theyll help lifting with a dozer and putting it in my truck. from there im on my own. Now i know these motors are heavy. but i dont wanna pass it up, so im thinking on buying it. i wouldnt put it in till the 6.5 dies out but id slowly build it so when its ready to put in, i have one bad a$$ truck, I have the nv4500 in mine and its four wheel drive. What all would i need to do to convert it? i know its limited wiring but i need a good description on what i need to change ect so i can start getting parts so im prepared when this motor blows.

Thanks for the help

I don't have much (any) info on your swap, but for $400, you'd be retarded not to pick up that truck. Is it a 5 spd as well? AFAIK, chevy had a different NV4500 than what dodge used. Different casing as well as shafts/gears. Not sure what years they were different though.

for sure you can do it cheap....i'm sure that there is a way you can make yours transmission work....wouldnt be much more than taking the time to do it....and believe me it will take lots of that

Should virtually be a bolt in, here is info from NV4500.com "In the early years of the NV4500, the GM and Dodge units did not share a common bolt pattern on the front of the case. In 95' and newer models, the front case bolt patterns of all NV4500's were retooled to the Dodge configuration. Input bearing retainers and input gear sizes/lengths remain different among the Dodge and GM variety as do tailhousings and output shaft spline specifications. "

So all you theoretically should have to do is change the Input shaft to a Dodge, and use the Dodge flywheel/clutch, etc..

Custom mounts for the engine, a external regulator, pushbuttons for the gridheaters, and a cable for the fuel.......

Get to it before someone beats you to the find![coffee]

Those two parts contradict each other. Bellhousing will fit according to the first bit, but the input shafts might not swap. Could probably get a custom clutch with the chevy hub, but thats much good if it turns out to be an 1-1/8" shaft.

No, you put the Dodge Input shaft and retainer on the Chebby trans and then just use stock Dodge Bellhousing, clutch, etc.. The tail end and TC remain Chebby.

Easy cheesy.
