I have an 05 auto and pull a 5th. was wondering if the idiot light on the dash is sufficient warning or should I install a guage? Does anyone know at what temp the warning light would go off ?

You also get some extra warning before that happens.. I'm not sure what temp it happens at, but the tranny will dump a gear to help cool itself off if it gets too hot. This happens before the light comes on. I've only ever had it happen once, on a good long uphill grade. It took a couple miles before it would shift up again.

I've got a gauge and have hit 265 without lighting the idiot light.
I did it backing into a tight spot on a hot day with the trans at 220 when I got there. I'd suggest a gauge to give you some idea before the light comes on.

Where does the factory measure the temp. from??

Not sure, but I tap the same sender with my X-monitor. It's possible that I'm not calibrated the same as the light... hard to say.

Is there an easy place to tap into the tranny? Maybe a port that is just plugged?

I just ordered a trans pan and guages from MDW hotroddiesel.com. The pan including the extra fluid capacity is tapped for a temperature sensor. This is by far the easiest way to tell actual trans temp.

I had my x monitor from my 01 re-installed into my 05.I had BD install the trans. temp. in place of the fuel presssure on my 01 install. When I picked up my truck on the way home I noticed my tranny temps were at 135 to 140 degrees all highway no hills driving. I wonder how accurate that is? Ithink they tapped into existing sensor wiring.

I'm betting I'm on the right wire since the value begins at ambient temp (when cool) and climbs to 160 and stays there doing normal driving. I need to tow heavy and lock/unlock the TC to bump the temp much. Pushing 5 tons backwards up my driveway will do it for sure!

I can see how it would be easy to pick the wrong wire though. It's a 50 pin block and the labels cannot be read by mortal eyes without a lot of light. I pulled the connector to get a better look at mine before I tapped. On the right wire it should just be scaling voltage to temp... if there was a poor connection there could be voltage drop (but that would read low?). The only other issue could be calibration factor which could differ year to year. I don't know...
