Amsoil air filter - yea / nay

I have an '06 5.9 megacab, Auto trans. I have used the amsoil air filter for about 30k. It is the re-usable type and I check it frequently and clean it often. I'm not in dusty conditions except for while on the road from time to time. Like last month ( March ) we spend a lot of time in the Florida everglades on some pretty dusty roads. Other than that mostly normal driving conditions. It seems that whenever I check I find the flo-meter on the filter housing indicating yellow. My question is: Is the amsoil filter too restrictive for good air flow into our engines. Would I be better going to a different filter. I like amsoil products and do like the fact that it is cleanable and re-usable but I also don't want to starve my engine for good air flow. Would appreciate hearing opinions on the re-usable filer elements.

HappY EasteR to all,

I used one for a short time when they came out. My particular one slid around in the airbox,so I returned to a stock one. The new NAPA/Wix 9946 is hard to beat. I did the www.psmdiesel.com. airbox mod years ago and no more Filterminder movement at all.

Mine started to not flow well very soon after I put it in. My indicater kept drawing down.
AMSOIL offered to replace it, but I wasn't impressed enough to take the time with it.
The new HD Dodge factory one works great for me.

If it is pulling down the minder, it is restricting airflow somewhat. It can be a real balancing act between good airflow and good filtration. It's hard to find a filter that's a given size that improves on both of these features.

I have a reuseable K & N and have cleaned it at least once every 20K miles if not a bit sooner. I hit a dusty road now and again and it sure seems to trap the dust. I like it.
So..

Vote +1 for yea.

I've been reading about the new generation of air filters from Dodge, if I remember correctly they are larger and seem to work well. May try then or go NAPA. Have to think on it for a bit. I like the cleanable element but if it's to restrictive that's not good. So we'll have to see.

thanx all

I have the Amsoil EAA189 cleanable dry filter. I could easily pull the minder down all the way with the stock air filter. Ever since putting in the Amsoil I cannot pull down the filter minder. I clean it often (about every 5 to 10k miles) because I live and drive in very dusty conditions living in the desert southwest. Every time I clean it I check for dust post filter and the tube is always spotless. Or should I say Dust less!!

Mine is always clean beyond the filter also. I have no complaint with the filter. I do not live in dusty conditions like the desert SW but occassionally I do find myself driving in them. Most of my driving is light and local. I do to my trailer when we travel but other than the towing my driving is on the light side. I think I've read here where the filters for the newer 6.7's will fit and is a larger element. Are they working well ?????

If I ever got rid of mine I would go back to another paper filter that is actually twice as deep as our stock one. I know the part number has been posted up here. A little searching will find it pretty quick. I hear it does a great job.

EDIT: Here is the part number 53034249AA

And here is some good reading about it plus a few others all in one thread!

I have pulled the filter minder down into the Red with new Fleetguard air filters with a few WOT thus in plain words the filter minder is more or less a Joke and not 100% accurate.

I just called Amsoil tech information. They told me that it is the result of a design flaw in the 5.9 filter box. ( ie. passing the buck I think) but my problem is a known issue. They sent me information on how to return the filter to them for a refund. They do not have a replacement. So I get the refund and purchase a Mopar or NAPA filter I guess and see if there is any improvement.

I appreciate all the information out there from this forum. Thanks all
