Alternative Guage mounting

I have not seen ANYTHING about putting guages where the ashtray is? is there a reason no one has a couple of pod's to go there? This would be considerably better for viewing said guages than to the right of the stereo...
just a thought,
-Tim

I put one in the cubby hole beside the radio and it worked great. Geno's sells the plate that goes in there (@ $7.00) but it looks kind of goofy. I used it as a template and built one from metal and used fiberglass bondo to build it up so it looks stock. I also mounted the gauge inside a 45 degree bezel. Looks nice.

I agree that inside that cubby is a good spot, but I use that to hold my cell phone! :P... What I want is a gauge pod like the 03+ have, right under the overhead console, and right above the rearview mirror. I'm not sure there's enough room on the 02 and older but it's still thought .

I wouldn't mind seeing a gauge pod for the ashtray, but it is a little far down to look to see what's going on with the gauges.

Here's what I fabbed up for mine...it's easily viewed, and you can still you the ashtray for things like cellphones if you really want to.

That looks good..real good. Did you have to sacrifice a gauge pod for that?

I did sacrifice a gauge pod, but one could just glass one up if they were a little more ambitious. I bought a column mount pod and was planning to use that, but it blocked the stock instrument cluster more than I liked. Rather than deal with returning it, I cannibalized it for my ashtray mount. Best decision I ever made...

That is rather visible, very impressive, good work!

Does anyone else have the limp ash tray mod? mine keeps opening up everytime I hit a bump , it was the same way on the other trucks I test drove as well, so I'm just assuming at this point it's fairly common ... Do you have any problems with the ashtray opening all the time with the weight of the pod/gauge there?

No problems here...I've never had it drop open, before or after the mod. It even holds its position if half open, etc.

It's been a while...but I think it was just some leftover marine epoxy from working on my boat.
