Alternate Axle Vent Idea
For many years, my pinion-seal has had a persistent drip.
I replaced the seal and still drip.
I found my axle-vent tube, hanging loose in a brake-line splitter/bracket, rusted off flush with the axle-tube.
The hole it used to reside in is rusted over solid.
As I have a rear fuel-tank, just inches behind the axle, I can't get in between there, with anything that would do any good, to re-drill and re-thread the hole.
I came up with a solution that I can live with.
I replaced the differential fluid fill-plug with a 3/4 X 1/8 NPT adapter.
I screwed a 1/8 street-ell, pointing UP, into this adapter.
I screwed a 1/8NPT X 3/16 hose-barb into the street-ell.
I stuck on a length of 3/16 clear tubing, routing it up, high and dry, and installed a U fitting in the top end to prevent water from getting into the system.
Now, I have an axle-vent that I can service and inspect each time I check the rear-end.
To check the rear-end fluid, I remove the clear-tubing from the hose-barb, and simply un-screw the adapter-fitting, street-ell, and hose-barb assembly, all together, just like it were a standard plug.
Works like a charm.
