Allison

Hi,
My first post at dtr. I appreciate any help from you all.
I've been talking to a guy about his 1996 Dodge 2500HD SLT Cummins. He bought it new and says it came with an Allison 4spd auto trans with a pto takeoff on the side. Other dodge folks claim an Allison trans was never offered from the factory. Anybody hear differently? He used it to work around his horse farm down a 3 1/2 mile washboard dirt road. He hauled a trailer with 4 ton of hay and a ton of feed in the bed over the highway at speed and down that washboard road. Other than oil changes , front disc pads and 100k trans fluid and filter, the truck has all original equiptment at 170k miles! Claims the rear brake shoes look almost new! I have not seen the truck yet. What should I be looking at and for on this truck in particularly the trans and running gear and of course the motor?

No Allison ever came from the Dodge factory.

Give it the usual checks that you give a used truck, ask about the KDP (do a search and read a while) if it is a 4x4 check the front end carefully, as they are not the best ever built. The 12v is a pretty tough engine, it takes a lot to hurt them.

I have a 96 that I bought new. They told me when I ordered it, that it would have an Allison transmission. It arrived with a Chrysler transmission and the Dealership acted shocked that it did not come with the Allison.

He probably believes he has an Allison but as already stated, the Dodge trucks do NOT come with an Allison. The rear brakes always look good on the 96 trucks because the brakes are so poor on the rear.

Replace the wheel cylinders with some from a 1 ton chevy and you will finally have brakes that function properly

My '96 has the access plate for a PTO, on the side of the transfer case.
