Aligning Truck Backing to GN Hitch

I have had my 70-gallon semi-aux tank in the bed of my truck for about a week now with a big thanks from a member here on the forum that helped me with the install last weekend, and I am really enjoying the longer driving range it provides.

However, I now know that its a bit more difficult to align the coupler on my GN trailer with the hitch, since the view I was able to see before is now blocked by the aux tank. Is there some kind of rod or device that can help me to align the truck properly to the trailer so that I won't have to constantly get out to check to see if the coupler is directly over the hitch?

A buddy of mine uses a piece of foam pipe wrap and sticks on the ball as a aid in backing up to the GN.

I have seen people use an old magnetic mount antenna with a fiberglass whip, they stick it to the ball and when they knock it off the GN coupler is over the ball.

I know another guy who made a bracket with a switch, has a little battery pack and a couple small lights that he sticks onto his coupler via a magnet, when the light comes on the switch has made contact with his toolbox/fuel tank and he is all lined up. Kind of a neat little gadget, works perfectly.

I set a cone right at the back corner of my bumper but I have a pintle hitch not a gn. doesnt seem to work the best if you have to come at it from a different angle than when you unhooked.

I feel ya. It used to be so easy. Then I added a fuel tank and tool box. My seat was gettin worn out on the edge. I was thinking about attaching a spot mirror to the top of the gooseneck. Never got around to it. I like River Rams idea.

Get one of them and mount on toolbox,,, its wireless and all,,, I have one on my one truck on the licence plate and makes hooking up trailers a breeze.

Walmart sells them as well, so you can look at it first

I tried the mirror attached to the nut on the GN and it seems to work but it is difficult to see the ball when you get close >> I thought of painting a stripe in one of the grooves on the bed liner with white of yellow (bright) paint and painting the ball too >> I know the ball will not stay painted for long but it is worth a try.....

I am used to backing to a bumper pull and never had a problem >> I started feeling retarded trying to back up to the GN with my aux tank back there... Glad to see I am not the only one!!! hehehehe....

Try putting a stripe on the fuel tank in line with the ball it works no matter what angle you back to it.

Use the Force, Luke. You don't need to "see" anything. Or try some of the great suggestions above.

I have seen in stores a small flag mounted to a rod with a magnet on the bottom. Stick the magnet on the ball and you can see the flag through the rear window.

I use the center post of the rear sliding window....all I have to guesstimate is how far to back up.

While teaching the BOSS to hook up, I ran a piece of blue masking tape( sold for painting) to show the line to the ball and a piece on each side of the bed to show how far back to go, worked great...
