Airdog II Install

Hi guys,

I'm about to pull the trigger on an Airdog II for my '04. I'd like to keep the stock fuel filter for extra water/particulate filtering.

What additional fittings or lines will I need to do this other than what comes in the Airdog install kit? I'll be having my shop do the work but I want to make sure to supply all the parts so it doesn't take forever.

Will I need to change the line going from the filter canister to the CP3?

Thanks!

I'm looking for specifics

I'm currently sitting on a drilling rig in SE Saskatchewan, ordering parts from the USA and shipping them direct to my shop in Calgary, so I'm not in a position to browse around in a parts store.

I'm pretty sure there's guys on here who are running this setup, chime in boys!

It depends. On an 04, the fuel pump was originally mounted on back of the FF canister. If it has already been upgraded with an in tank pump, I am not sure what fitting dodge uses to change the canister connection.

If it still has the canister mounted fuel pump, you are going to want to get rid if that, because when if fails, it will stop fuel flow. (not a flow through design.) Last I saw, Glacier diesel sold an adapter plate.

IIRC, the AD is a 3/4 line, so you will need a 3/4 - 1/2 line adapter to convert the AD over to the stock FF. (possibly). You may be able to find a fitting that goes into the adapter that has a 3/4 inlet. I believe that the line from the stock FF canister to the CP3 is a hard line off of a banjo that goes into a rubber line, back into a hard line to the CP3. (I'm a little rusty on this...) If this is true, you should be able to just get a fitting to go on the FF canister, and run the line to the CP3. AD supplies a couple of fittings, call them to find out what their kit includes before you go nuts.

I think that the AD manual also talks about running it to the FF canister, can't remember about that. Really, I'd just call AD and see if they have a kit for it.

Hope this helps. Like I said, it's been a while since I did this, but you get a rough idea.

Thanks Madhat, that helps.

FYI my truck was previously upgraded to the in-tank pump.

I found a Vulcan big-line kit from Geno's that upgrades the fuel line between the FF canister and CP3, so I've got that out of the way. Now I just need to know exactly what type of adapter I'll need to connect the AD line to the FF canister.

You can see the back of the canister from under the truck, or if you pull the driver side wheel well liner. Hard to see, but it will help a little to know what kind of adapter they put on. I would start another thread asking what the adapter looks like for the in tank retrofit on our trucks, I'm sure someone has it.

Here's a pic of the back of the canister from the wheel well. The silver piece is the adapter...

PureFlow has the fitting you need. You need the fuel canister inlet fitting for 03-04 Cummins applications.

I assume you work for PF... great to have you on the forum. I have nothing but great things to say about my AD, and the customer service I have received from them.

You said 03-04 trucks there for the adapter kit, some 04.5 trucks came with a filter mounted canister also. I was not until late 04 (calender, not model) that Dodge started putting the pump in the tank. Actually, when I ordered my AD, I received the wiring harness that was for the late late 04's to 05 up... it did not work. PFT made it right in a hurry, tho, I think I received the correct wiring harness in three days, and I called them in the evening.

Ok, the pump is in and running great.

Thank you to Lary at DTR for parts and info and to the gang at Pureflow for technical support. Thanks to Extra-Tech in Calgary for the install, which turned into a bigger job than they expected.

I'm happy with how this turned out, plumbed through the stock filter cannister with the fuel canister fitting and Geno's big-line kit to the CP3. I feel like I'm getting all the filtration and water seperation I need, and I'm no longer worried about how much fuel is actually getting to my CP3.

FYI The AD2 is significantly quieter than the black Carter Pump it replaced.
