Unhappy Airbag recalls on '01?

I wrecked my truck yesterday, and the airbag did not deploy. I was told that I passed out, drove off a 3.5' foot enbankment, across a small field (300'), and into a shallow drainage ditch. When I went into the ditch the front end dropped a little and hit the other wall of the ditch. The wrecker driver said I hit pretty hard. Now I need a hood, grill, both fenders, front bumper, windshield, and straighten the bed out. I had one of those 'jobbox'es in the bed at the time of this. Anyway, the airbag did not deploy like it should have. Did DC have a recall out on these, or was mine just a fluke 'not working'? We'll just wait to see what the insurance company has to say.

Wow glad you are okay. Mebbe you should concetrate on why you "passed out" instead of why the air bag didn't deploy.

Avoid telling the officials that you passed out while driving. They will take your driver license away. Best to figure out what caused you to pass out and not repeat it again!

There have been no air bag recalls.
Just the fact that you are here to ask the question indicates to me that the parameters necessary to deploy the air bags weren't met.

The only thing the doctors could find was heat exhaustion / dehydration. I had been welding and torching all morning.

There are three sensors that all must agree when to deploy the airbag. They measure the speed of the vehicle on impact, the direction of the impact and how fast it comes to a stop. As long as you weren't hurt you're lucky (depending on insurance coverage) the airbag didn't deploy as they are expendsive to replace.
Many new vehicles now also contain a "black box" that will tell how fast you were going before the crash, if your foot was on the brake or accelerator and if your seat belt is fastened. Insurance companies can use this data to verify your version of the of the accident so as to deny coverage.

As some might and might not know,i work for a wrecking yard.I use to work for a yard up here in Canada that was owned by
Ford.To make a long story short,we had to remove and deploy airbags.I would say if memory serves me right one in maybe twenty or thirty bags would not deploy. So you saying our's did not deploy does not surprise me.It's like anything else mechaznical or electrical produce in mass quanity. You're bound to
have defects.

When I rear ended a person in my dad's vette, I hit them at about 30mph. Airbag didn't deploy then either. My sister broadsided a tahoe in her infiniti at 60mph and her's didn't deploy either (hit him with the passenger front corner). You must have to be in a perfect head on collision for those things to be set off. At least your ok and that's all that matters.

When i totaled my 98 12v'er last summer, I hit a v6 mustang on the P side, direct t-bone. I was going around 35 mph, and no air bag deployment. Heck, I wasn't even wearing my seatbelt and all that happened was that my dog ended up in the front seat, coming from the back seat.

Can't say that the truck ended up ok (totaled, and NO Freaking Insurance from the other guy!!!) ---Now that will set you off!!!

Glad to hear that you're ok.

I flipped my old 92 Chevy 1/2t 4x4 end over end at 65mph- smashes the cab flat to the dash, bent both the front and rear end, bent frame, broke the trailer hitch clean off, lost right rear wheel etc... (it was ugly)- airbag never went off

Litterally drove my 3500 through a Bonneville about 18 months ago (he ran the red light and I basically ripped his car in half), hit him broadside at roughly 40ish mph.... air bags didn't deploy in my truck, for some reason his did. We all walked away. Struck me as odd that mine didn't deploy, but after the body shop finished thier $14K repair job, had the dealer recheck the airbag system and said it all checked out okay but couldn't tell me what requirements were needed to make them deploy (unless of course if i needed to take the steering wheel or dash apart for something and then they'd probably pop in my face)

Glad you are okay, the metal and plastic can be replaced....
