aftermarket fuel systems...

I have been reading about all the different fuel system replacements out there and I'm confused as to whether or not my will work with just a stronger pump like the walbro 392? My LP is starting to give me fits AGAIN and I already put on a Bully Dog pusher pump set up awhile back with 1/2" fuel lines when the LP is working the truck is steady at idle 22psi well know the LP quits from time to time and the pusher is making about 10psi (not good) needless to say I'm thinking that I should get a different fuel system on but I don't want to spend the money on a complete system if the one on my frame rail just needs a higher output pump. So if I put the Walbro pump on or a Holley that pushes higher volume will I be alright to just bypass the stock LP and go straight to the VP-44? Hope I have not confused anyone with my babel!

Great question, i look forward to the answer. i wonder the same things. I'm sure one of the resident diesel diehards will fill us in shortly.

I'm confused as well, getting close to 100k and still the stock system. Seems like the FAAS system is used too? Which is the best for a stock truck so I don't whip out my IP ?

You dont hear much about them but I have a RASP pump made by KO Engineering. It has been great. I never worry about the pressure anymore. It is a gear driven pump, run by a belt off a pulley on the end of the harmonic balancer. The only thing that can really go wrong with it is a broken belt that can be changed in literally 5 minutes or a seal which is a 15 minute job. It leaves the stock fuel system in place and is governend by a Hobbs switch. So if for some reason the belt breaks the stock system automatically takes over. Been running mine for almost 100k now and have not broken a belt but have had to replace a seal once. Cost of the seal less than 2.00(the seal doesnt keep it from working it just drips fuel when it goes out). As rpms go up so does pressure up to a point. At idle I am at 12-13psi and driving down the freeway at 75 14-15psi.

I got a 392 set up but I bought my line kit from wide open diesel for 200 bones along with the pump from ebay for 100. I am happy with the set up. the 392 is capable of 130 psi but you only need about 16psi so it runs at a 12 percent load so it basicly is not working at all.

Yes you can buy the walbro pump and bypass the stock pump and pusher pump. You will need a return regulator for the walbro to keep pressures in the safe range.

Lots of good choices out there...and more important... none are bad; just differing systems, quality and prices!
FASS, Airdog, RASP, Glacier, Holley Blue, Carter Campaign, ETC. All can be made to work. Depends on your budget and mechanical ability to some extent.
Deciding where your headed (power wise) and what's important to you....so you'll probably want to do a search and do some homework.

Bridleman - As explained, you can add more pump and bypass (eliminate) the lift pump and go straight to the Fuel filter... not straight to the VP-44.

This ^^ is probably the best setup going that you can do without swapping cams.

For the utmost in reliability, you want a mechanical setup. 12V lift pump failures are extremely rare. 24V lift pump failures are par for the course.

Electrical systems are easier to install in general, and can be made pretty reliable.

I've never been sold on the FASS/AIRDOG type of solution. It seems to me to take up too much space, cost to much, and STILL leave you with something that's not ultra reliable. FASS failures have happened-- more common than a $500 solution should allow, imo.

I don't know all the exact pricing, but here's what I recall for different options:
-- Walbro setups (i.e. GDP)-- $350 or so.
-- FASS/Airdog: $550 or more
-- Carter pusher setups: $200 or more
-- RASP: ~$800
-- Aftermarket Cam +lp: $850 plus expensive install

By my reckoning, the cam is actually the best value, even though it's the most expensive. You get an absolutely reliable LP AND better breathing to the engine.

When you look at the cost of a cam, it's not very high on the bang/buck. But when you balance it against the cost of the better LP solutions, it start to look like quite a bargain.

Barry, did you have Bob do your RASP install?? He had a truck in the bay doing a RASP last time I went to see him in Greeley.

There's a couple Rasp clones out there now- mitusa availible at Tredeisel and the boss fuel system from Glacier Diesel

Justin's right that if you are willing to go through with a cam install, the cummins pump is pretty cheap and is the ultimate solution for reliability, although they put out a lot of fuel and might have to be regulated down like the walboros.

If you already have 1/2" lines and other upgrades, all you need is a $100 Walbro from Ebay and a bypass regulator ($19-29, depending on where you get it from). You will be all set.
