Aftermarket Cruise Control With Factory Controls

After spending a couple weeks trying to get my cruise control working, I gave up. I really would wanna get it working but it would be cheaper I think to put an aftermarket kit of it. I was browsing online and in some Smart forum and someone said he had an Audiovox kit which he used his factory controls. All the part I have work except something in the wiring wont let it work. Does anyone have any help about this topic?

Have you tried replacing your brake light sw? They are a known problem, 3 sets of contacts, 2 of them for the cruise. For many years Chrysler cruise or ARA cruise was generally regarded as the best and most reliable out there. I would just fix what you have as it will most likely be something simple.

Well I'm not getting power out of the servo, brake switch, the signal wire from the ECM or PCM. I have a short in my done light wiring in the past and also one of the 12 volt inputs to my ECM I had to fix because it wasn't getting power. I could try jumpers and what not to see if I could get it working but I don't wanna short anything out.

For the cruise to turn on, the brake sw must have power through the normally closed contacts. The open contacts are for the brake lights. If you have power to the brake light sw on the normally closed contacts but non out the other side your brake light sw is a problem. One set of contacts returns power to the PCM to indicate the brakes are not applied the other set supplies the cruise servo.

There is no power at the brake switch so I got a new one and the cruise didnt work. If I don't get my lower shackles tomorrow, I will work on it again. Do you know where the power comes from to the brake switch?

Power is supplied from the PCM to both normally closed contacts of the brake sw. One set returns power back to the PCM the other set goes to the cruise servo.

I have tried a PCM from a late 2001 and my factory one, i haven't tested for power at the switch since I put my factory computer back in. I thought i read on here that someone with a later 2001 didnt need the servo so maybe they did away with that starting that year.

Diesel With Manual Trans.
The speed control system is fully electronically controlled
by the Engine Control Module (ECM). A
cable and a vacuum controlled servo are not
used if the vehicle is equipped with a manual
transmission and a diesel engine. This is a servo-
less system. The controls consist of two steering
wheel mounted switches. The switches are labeled:
ON/OFF, RES/ACCEL, SET, COAST, and CANCEL.
The system is designed to operate at speeds above
30 mph (50 km/h).
WARNING: THE USE OF SPEED CONTROL IS NOT
RECOMMENDED WHEN DRIVING CONDITIONS DO
NOT PERMIT MAINTAINING A CONSTANT SPEED,
SUCH AS IN HEAVY TRAFFIC OR ON ROADS THAT
ARE WINDING, ICY, SNOW COVERED, OR SLIPPERY.
DESCRIPTION - VEHICLE SPEED INPUT

Gas Engines and/or Diesel With Automatic Trans.
The Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) is no longer used
for any Dodge Truck.
Vehicle speed and distance covered are measured by
the Rear Wheel Speed Sensor. The sensor is mounted
to the rear axle. A signal is sent from this sensor to the
Controller Antilock Brake (CAB) computer. A signal is
then sent from the CAB to the Powertrain Control
Module (PCM) to determine vehicle speed and distance
covered. The PCM will then determine strategies for
speed control system operation.

Diesel Engine With Manual Trans.
Vacuum is not used for any part of the speed control
system if equipped with a diesel engine and a
manual transmission.

Diesel Engines With Automatic Trans.
On diesel powered engines equipped with an automatic
transmission: an engine driven vacuum pump,
a one-way check valve and vacuum lines are used to
supply vacuum to the speed control servo. A vacuum
reservoir is not used.

This is out of the 2001 manual. Apparently a big change was made along the line.

I have the servo system and have my own CC problem. I am, finally, going to do another CC test this afternoon. It may be the last one too.

I have factory 2000 and 2001 manuals, they are both the same and say that a servo is used. However I also remember someone on here saying they installed cruise and they didn't need the servo. It is probably the later 2001 or even the 2001.5 that didn't get the servo.

Trucks with a manual don't use servo. Trucks with auto do use servo.
If I remember correctly, mechrisme has an auto so he will need the servo.

I was thinking I would just connect all the wires directly instead of using the factory wiring to see if that would work. I have tried two different ECMs, one was out of a later 2001 one though. All the parts are good, its just something wont let them communicate.

I know this is an old thread but has this problem ever been resolved. I am going through an Identical situation with my 2001 Dodge Ram 2500 Cummins Diesel 5 speed. I installed a clock spring and cruise switches from a donor truck. I am running out of ideas on what to try to get it to go next.
