Aftermarket Amp With Factory Radio

Forgive my ignorance but does anyone out there know if you can install an aftermarket amplifier and upgraded speakers using the factory radio? If so how would it be done? If i recall you need low level outputs in order for this to be done but I may be wrong. I figure if any one would know it would be this forum. Thanks in advance for any and all information.

It would sound like crap, but wouldn't get stolen Not sure how you do it but I know it's possible because I had it on my tahoe before I upgraded the head unit. Get yourself a head unit with 4v preouts!

Just get a speaker level converter, I think that's what they're called. You splice a few wires into your factory speaker wires and it has RCA outputs on the other side. That's what I had to do to keep the Monsoon system in my '98 T/A and '02 Z-28. It works pretty good.

I ran that setup for a while. I had the factory 6 disk head unit going to an Audio Control EXS and then to a Diamond Audio D5600.4. It didn’t sound all that bad at low to normal listen levels. When you started to turn up the volume the highs became a little too bright.

I added new infinity speakers and an old alpine 10" sub and amp I had laying around, almost immediately after purchasing my truck. I have the speakers running off of the factory deck, and line level inputs to the amp. It was just supposed to be a temporary stereo upgrade until I had the time, and money to install a better system and an alarm. I have since bought a new head unit, amp and an alarm and they are sitting in the garage waiting to be installed. However this set up sounds decent enough that finding time for installation hasn't been on the top of my priority list.

A lot of amps are available with line level and RCA inputs, so you probably won't need to buy a line level converter if you buy the right amp.

I added a 200 watt Eclipse amp and FoCal speaker and mine will blow you out of the truck and sound good doing it. I've got the standard AM/FM CD and even the installer was impressed with how it sounds. I think a lot of it has to do with the speakers you decide on. The FoCal's made a HUGE difference in sound quality.

amp

I kept my stock 6 disc in dash unit and added a jl audio 6 channel amp. The amp has high and low level inputs. I just spliced into the back of the radio and used the high level inputs. I also added some Infinity component speakers in the doors and a 10" sub under the back seat sound great.

On the same subject, I have replaced all 4 door speakers (front Polk 6 x 9 and rear 5.5'') an added a powered bazooka. Overall sound quality has improved however I think these new speakers need a little kick if you know what I mean, but so far i'm happy.

On edit. I have the "Access" 690CA's in the front doors and the "Access" 130CA's in the rear doors.
