Afe stage 2

I bought the stage 2 today, but accidently got the 5 gauge filter insted of the proguard 7....does this filter work better than the kn replacement that I had in the truck before? Do you recommend the prefilter?

I don't have the progaurd 7 on mine either, I did put the prefilter on just to help keep the big stuff and water off of the filter. So far it has worked perfectly. When installing I had to trim the box in order to make it fit though. I had to trim around the AC line and the shock tower with a dremel.

A pre filter is just a water resistant sleeve that fits over your filter to help keep water and large dust particles off of your filter. I use one to help keep water off the filter and also to help keep the filter clean so I don't have to clean it as often. click on this link and scroll down to the bottom there is a picture of the prefilters from AFE AFE stage 2
I always get mine from Outerwears.com which is who makes the prefilters for everybody else and they sell them direct for a lot cheaper. I believe AFE charges $41 for the prefilter whereas I got the same thing from Outerwears shipped for $28. Just call them and give them the AFE prefilter part# and they will quote you a price. The only difference is it will say Outerwears on it instead of AFE.

As far as the differences between Stage 1 and Stage 2, my understanding is they both flow the same, the only difference is the Stage 2 is enclosed in a box on 3 sides and the top which helps keep the turbo quieter. I went with the stage 2 to help with the turbo noise and also to help keep **** off the filter when I'm playing in the mud. I went out the other day playing in the mud and when I was done I had mud all over in the engine compartment but there wasn't anything on my filter just all over the box protecting it.
