AFE Quiet Intake

Anyone have the AFE Stage 2 quiet intake? I'm looking to get better air flow than stock, but I don't want to listen to a turbo whistle that could wake the dead (like normal AFE Stage 2's).

Thanks,
Paul

this is what i'm in the process of doing now. i have a 3" hole cut into the bottom now. but most likely will end up like 3.5". i need to get over to lowes and get a length of the corregated drainage pipe(thin wall) and connect it to the box, then run it down about 24"

Bob4x4 has one. Maybe he'll stop in and comment. He's busier on the other two sites.

I've thought about something similar, but was looking at the AFE enclosed system for two reasons. The stock air box limits the size of filter (whereas the AFE runs a 6" ProGuard 7), and the intake tube of the stock is so much smaller than the AFE torque tube. Surely that's a limitation to the stock system?

The downside (for me, at least) to the normal AFE Stage 2 is the really loud turbo whistle, so I'm hoping to learn that the enclosed box has the advantages of the standard AFE intake (better flow), without the crazy whistle.

A "whooshing" air sound, however, IS music to my ears! Reminds me of a 454 gobbling down air, scaring small children and threatening to pull off arms...

There are a few companies that make a tube to replace your stock intake tube. You can normally connect those straight to your stock box. My setup is using a DPP cool hose, stock box with 4" hole cut in bottom which leads to a plastic hose that runs to the air dam in the fender. I replaced the stock filter with an Amsoil Nano drop in. After removing the silencer I still dont think its very loud. It sounds good, but not loud or annoying.

i would say that the K&N filter in my stock box, 3.5" hole in the bottom along with the cool hose, would flow just as much as the afe stage II quiet box.
taking into consideration that both turbos are stk. and the inlet tubing is 4" I.D

the stock filter flows plenty of air...i have seen trucks dyno over 700 with stock filter and just a hole cut in the box..cool air is better than hot air.

The torque tube is a waste in my opinion...the turning vanes in the stock elbow is VERY benificial...just eliminate the baffle int he tube right at the turbo and leave the stock tube

I would bet that the stock tube with the baffles removed would be very similar to any aftermarket tubes. I really didnt feel like cutting it open and cutting out the baffles so I went with DPP's cool hose.

Wow...700 HP with a stock filter. That's way more than I'm ever going to hit. Sounds like my money would be better spent on something else.

I see you have an aftermarket intake manifold. Have you really noticed the difference that Erik@LCD has reported on this site? He reports an increase of 38 horse and 107 ft-lbs at 1900 rpm. Not bad for just adding a manifold!

Here's Erik's post:

for some reason peoples opinions vary on the intakes...

But mine was worth every penny to me.

between 1400-2200 there was a VERY noticable seat of the pants increase.

Turbo spools a few hundred rpm sooner...and torque comes on strong....perfect for me...since im always in that rpm range....Towing especially...

I couldn't believe the torque difference it made. Top end doesnt feel any different...but i never wind her out anyway.

These differences were felt when my truck was still on stock programming...I would say this is my second favorite mod...right behind the smarty JR.

I think most people who are disappointed with the intake horn were expecting top end horsepower...and/or they have an automatic and they cant feel/utilize the low-mid torque increase like a manual tranny truck can?
