Advice on cracks in crank....
So as i posted before, my truck has been sitting for quite awhile because in the process of a rebuild, the guy who was going to work on the crank found some small cracks on the crank.
He told me to look for a new crank, but money has been TIGHT this year, so the truck just sits as i make payments on it.
Anyway...I was talking to a few people who tell me that most large cranks WILL have cracks along the radius and that this is normal. My father is a machinest and he says that alot of times these thing will get suface cracking that has absolutely no effect on the strength.
He says that he has used these things in machinery that sees a hell of alot more stress than my crank.
Anyway, i need to find someone somewhat local who can look at what i have and tell me what they think.
I know I will get those responses that say " any crack at all i wouldnt use it"...BUT I am being told that some of these cracks are normal right from the factory. I reallyu dont feel like throwing money away for no reason.
If its junk, then so be it, but i would like someone who actually KNOWS something about this to look at it.
The guy who found the cracks told me straight up that he is a Chevy 350 man and doesnt know much about the diesel engines.
ALSO......He was planning on doing a spray weld to build up the #6 on the crank, (thought he already did it, but he hadn't) my dad was telling me something about just adding "hard chrome" ??
Thanks for any help, Dan

I would take it to CUMMINS and let them look at it but as far as I'm concerned , I wouldn't install any cracked, damaged, warped, heat soaked, or "slightly defective" part in a 10k plus engine. especially in one I own and plan to keep.

we run a billet Chrome Moly crankshaft in our Blown Alky engine and it has cracks occassionally which we usually have a crankshaft shop (That regrinds etc.) grind and re-weld them. When done, they are as good as new. I wouldn't hesitate to take my cummins in there and get it fixed either.
