Advancing Timing on a Ford Tractor Diesel?

I have a 1964 Ford 4000D with a 170 cid 4 cylinder diesel. It is naturally aspirated. I did some resetting of the timing a while back to factory specs and it helped the tractor greatly. Much less blue smoke, which used to be commonplace.
Now it seems like it is smoking a little more than it used to. I'm thinking I should advance the timing some more but I don't know how much to do it.
I know with a gas engine you just advance it a ways and then see if it pings during accelleration, and if it does, retard the timing a little.

What do I look for/listen for on a diesel when playing with the timing?

Thanks,
Chris

If you advance it too far it will sound like a hammer trying to get out of the exhaust manifold.
Danny

Like Chris said, someone on the YTMAG Ford Board will answer just about anything you might need to know for Ford tractors. Several members here hang out over there - CTDs, old tractors - might be contagious.

Maybe you do it like I did after rebuilding the engine in my 870 Case. ???

Put the pump on, try and line the bolt holes up with the marks in the paint?? ;D ;D

Runs good, starts good. Mus t be pretty close! ;D

One of these days I should have someone with the proper tools check it I guess. [undecided]

Re:Advancing Timing on a Ford Tractor Diesel?

Tool,
I actually have a procedure to follow in my Ford 400 manual, and can find the necessary marks to verify against.
Another problem I have had is turing the injector pump since it has solid lines running into it. This is a brute forse kind of thing and I worry about breaking something, cracking a line, etc.
I will be taking another whack at it this week or weekend.

Chris
