a friend of mine went to a dyno day with his friend and his ford and put down like 370 horses and 780 ft lbs or something like that. I wanted to go but i was busy that day. He is always ragging on me that his friends ford is way faster then my cummins so i want to go to the next dyno day and show him up so i am starting to think about more upgrades and i think that the next thing that needs to be upgraded is the turbo stock HY just ain't getting it done, my question is about head studs i have read 40 psi is the magic number for needing head studs so what do i need to do, do i just swap out one stud at a time or do i have to pull head and replace gasket and everything i don't think i will hit over 40 psi yet but i do want to do like 100 horse injectors later and i think that after injectors and a better turbo i could hit 40 psi so i am trying to think ahead so i know what i am in for. sorry for the long post but thanks for your helping me put a powerstroke in its place. OH yeah the truck with the most power that day was a dodge 980 horse and 1700 ft lbs

Wow, that was a real long sentence!

If torque is what you're after, small turbos work well for that. When I dynoed my 12v for the second time (first time was stock, whopping 175 rwhp, 400 tq.), I had 150ish injectors, GSK and bumped the timing, still on stock turbo. Did 331rwhp and 1072 tq. Conversely, my dually, with big injectors and a 66mm turbo did 521hp, but only 900 tq.

For the stud issue, 40 psi is a guideline. I have ran a 62 and 66mm turbo on my dually, hitting 50 psi without studs. I've ran the stocker, 62mm and 64mm turbos on my 12v to 47psi without studs. Original bolts and gasket, as far as I can tell. Will every truck do that? No. But thats not to say they all need studs at 40 psi. Lots of guys retorque the stock bolts as well.

OK yes long sentence. Not really looking for just torque wanted to put a title that would get peoples attention, but torque makes the truck go. To quote the great carol shelby "horsepower sells cars torque wins races" I want to increase power to make the truck go faster. I only hit like 22 psi with stocker turbo and thats with a j hook so i want a bigger turbo to get more boost too. So what should i look to get for a turbo HX40 or a phat shaft was thinking like 62 14 or something like that.

a bigger turbo won't get you more boost - bigger injectors/more fuel will give you more boost . . .

I second that, but you also have to consider that HY soon after the fuel increase, as it's choke point is about 29 psi. You can add enough fuel with a box to overrun the compressor map of that HY. I wouldn't worry too much about the head studs yet. I ran my 99 with twins and hit 70 psi, though I tried not to exceed 60 psi, with stock head bolts. I did re-torque them, and never had a problem with the head gasket, at least from compression.

For prolonged periods of time 40lbs will go boom eventually. Having said that my baby h1c which is a significantly smaller turbo that I used to run on my 1st gen would hit 40lbs all the time. Eventually though, boom went the dynamite.

so am i missing something cause i am pretty sure that i have enough fuel for higher then 22 lbs of boost but yet it never goes higher then 22 how do you get 40 lbs of boost from an HY i bought the j hook and 22 is all i see. what am i missing i know i could hit more boost because when on the throttle the exhaust is smokey so to me that means more fuel then boost right.

Make sure your j-hook is installed right. Still sounds like your wastegate is opening.

My Edge EZ made me 35psi of boost, and then I installed mild injectors and it now makes 40 psi of boost.

Pull your wastegate line and hit it hard. If I stand on mine it will top out at 38 psi with a #10 plate and stock injectors.

I don't get it at all. I read a lot of people getting 20 to 30 and I am getting pounds.

last dyno i did on my HY was 1213TQ and was more then 20psi with no j-hook, 62/71/14 is next on my list ...

If you don't have a boost fooler it wont go over 22 psi before it defuels.

The juice will do the boost fooling.
