Someone should have studied the affects of static discharge.

Excellent! If he filled them w/ acetylene it wouldn't have been that big of an explosion...fill them w/ the perfect mix of oxygen and acetylene and you definitely have a BOMB! I've seen a little shopping bag filled w/ oxy-acetylene and blown up...nice! Also saw a 30 gallon garbage bag blow up...WOW! It was 70 yards away and you could feel the shockwave!

I dunno.. I just got this off another mailing list I'm on. I think the article said there was more than one balloon in the back seat of the truck.

Just seems to me that when stuff like that happens you never get the straight story the first time. Great pics thought! I'll bet the adjustor took a second look at first sight! That was one powerful explosion.

Something just says that the story is not right. If the door was open and he set one off the blast would have exited through the door not through the roof. Maybe broken the windows but not the damage that is shown.
Also if the kid was taking the balloon out at the time, at best he landed several yards away trying to put the fire out, at worst he is no longer with the living. Notice most of the windows are still in place.

Thats uneal, My buddy used to fill 40 gal garbage can liners with acyletene. It would rock the whole neighborhood. Never thought about blowing yourself up. Wish I knew where he was now so I could forward the pics to him.

But did you do them out in the open, or confined space? Gunpowder has to be enclosed too. There's a good chance he had both gases on and used the trigger on the welder to fill the balloons. Just thinking out loud.

Not funny, but brings up a good story from my archives.

A mechanic who worked for us was "nearly" crazy. He would take a regular old 5 gallon plastic bucket, turn it upside down, and set the torch under it for a while. Well, after he blew a hole in our shops ceiling, he quit doing it inside. When he did it outside, with a good wind, the pieces of the bucket would fly for a Quarter of a mile .

BTW, The reason I say this guy was "nearly" crazy, was he was a darn good mechanic.
Another one of his tricks was to take a lift cylinder off of a combine, and slide a wrist pin from a 426ci Allis Chalmers engine down into it. With enought starting fluid behind it, the would fly 1000yds, and bury themselvs in the dirt 4ft. I once witnessed that feat.

For a science project I filled balloons with different gases and exploded them with a flame on a real long stick. The pure acytelene just made a nice purple flame and a deep roar. But with the oxy-acytelene mix, holy ****, the balloon was just a small one, and it made a realllly big bang, I did it outside, about 50 yds from the school, and just about blew the windows out on that side of the school. The teachers said they felt the windows shake on the other side of the school.

PS. For a good bang, put some acytelene down a potato gun instead of hairspray. Usually blows up the potato gun but sure makes a nice flame at night. It just one of them "hold my beer and watch this" kinda deals
