What would you say is average life expectancy of these trucks are? I know there are alot of different variables but what is the average max miles before SERIOUS repairs have to be made such as replacing the motor or scraping the truck all together?

at 294K with mine and it runs HARD!!

It's too hard to say. Cummins says the average rebuild for these motors is 350k miles. So that should tell you something.

One of my members ran his truck at the track and burnt up his clutch while doing so. His truck had 490k+++ miles on it and he was running soybean oil as fuel!!!

If left stock a million miles is not unreasonable to expect. I'm looking a probably 750 to 800 k on mine.

I think the biggest factor here is the maintenance schedule that each owner adheres too. Which is sorta true for any mechanical device. If you look at class 7 or 8 big rigs, it's not uncommon to see million mile trucks. I do realize that the size of those motors and drivetrain are much larger, but they do haul up to 80,000 lbs daily and usually are running around the clock. Their maintenance schedule is scrutinized by the DOT, so on average, they are very well taken care of.

I agree with the maintance parameter, I also will say that leaving it stock helps but towing with it and using it at least semi-hard is also essential!!

Overall it's the truck that will go first...and that's why you see a lot of people selling thier truck with 200 - 350k on it, it's a heavy ($$$$) repair period.

It all comes down to......you get out what you put in. If the truck is kept well maintained and clean....she should treat you well. Let her go to crap and she'll leave you walking.

317,000 miles on mine. Runs and drives sweet. Even if it needs any major components, it will be cheaper to fix mine than buy a new one.

The Cummins motor will outlast the truck. I think on these dodge trucks its how many frontend/transmission components you want to put on before you toss in the towel and pull the motor for another project

At about 500k

i hear that they might need a minor tune up, or minor overhaul, but there are stories with many of them over 600K and some well over a million...

At 192K mines barely broken in... BUT my old coworker has one with 400K on the ticker, stock minus the starwheel tuned, and it still runs very well....

Just take care of them, and they will do the same for you...

This poll is skewed. I'd say most don't last 1,000,000 miles because of cold starts, improper maintenance, etc. Those that do are constantly on the road just like the fleet trucks.

You dont think that fleet vehicles go without consistant oil changes? There are some ignorant people out there driving fleet vehicles that "drive it like a rental"
