Acceleration Problem

Acceleration Problem
I HAVE A 2002 2500 DIESEL WITH AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION. SOMETIMES WHEN STARTING OUT IN 1ST GEAR THE TRUCK, NO MATTER HOW FAR DOWN YOU PRESS THE ACCELERATOR ,WILL ONLY GO SO FAST. THE RPMS DO NOT INCREASE LIKE THEY SHOULD. THE PEDAL CAN BE PRESSED TO THE FLOOR AND THE TRUCK CONTINUES MOVING AT LOW RPMS AND WILL NOT GAIN SPEED. EVENTUALLY, AFTER ABOUT 1/4 TO 1/2 MILE OF TRAVELLING AT THIS CREEP SPEED , THE TRUCK WILL FINALLY TAKE OFF AND ACCELERATE AS USUAL. I GIVE THE TRUCK AMPLE WARMUP TIME. THIS IS AN INTERMITTENT PROBLEM. IT MAY DO IT ONE DAY AND NOT THE NEXT. ANY IDEAS? THANKS IN ADVANCE

Same Here
I have a 2002 2500 as well with the same issues. My local dealer told me it was the cp3 pump. I questioned the dealer rep and he reassured me that was the problem and I didn't need to replace the lift pump. I have read many post on this and I feel that my vp44 pump is going out and I need to replace the lift pump as well with something other than a stock pump. I will be watching this thread to see if my diagnosis was anywhere close to this.

A cp3 pump is the new IP for 3rd gen trucks, your 02 is a 2nd gen and has a VP44 like you said. Also you LP could be bad but if your doing the VP at least have the LP tested or your new VP$$ will have a short life.
To the OP sounds like dead peddle, try the key trick. Key on no start, off, on, off, on and read the odometer window and report any codes. Pray you don't see a p0216.
Good luck to both.

DWL, does your truck have an issue with the pedal at highway speeds of 55-60. Mine started out like yours and it has steadily gotten worse. Now at 55-60 mph the pedal is non responsive until it is pressed almost half way down then it will jump up and go. I just tried the key on and off like 2500ram suggested and I am showing p1693 and p0216 codes.

You have VP troubles and "could be covered under warranty" with a fight if your stock, modified your on your own.
the 216 is the code for the VP electronics going bad. The 1693 is a companion code.
Good luck.

scooter 413, sounds like we have the same issues. I will try the key on key off and see if any codes show up.When traveling at 55-60 the same problem persist ie, dead pedal ,no acceleration. I checked and I'm getting the same codes as you. P1693 & P0216. Any ideas on code meanings.

P0216 is the injection pump being unable to achieve required injection timing. This means that you need to replace the VP-44. P1693 is a companion code meaning there are more codes that can be read by special equipment, but you need not worry about that. 0216 is the one that is important.
You can not repair the VP yourself, at least not to last a long time. Gotta replace it. There is an excellent write up on this in the tech section here.
