ABS & brake lights and 4x4

My 2006 2500 has been chirping at me intermittently along with flashing the ABS and brake lights. At some random point the lights go off and then they'll come back at some later random point. I've read some of the other ABS light threads but simply haven't tried to isolate the problem. Since it's supposed to be above freezing this weekend I'll have a chance to figure out which sensor (hopefully not one of the hub$) is at fault.

Didn't care if the ABS was functional or not until earlier this week when I was on an icy uphill slope at an intersection and needed 4WD - can't get 4WD when the ABS & brake lights are on. The 4WD dash light simply flashes at me - tried again later when the brake warning lights were out and the transfer case engaged 4x4 immediately. *** - don't care if I have ABS or not when I want 4WD!

So, can anyone think of a reason why non-functional ABS should prevent 4WD? Ridiculous. Anyone have a work-around, in case I don't get the ABS sensor gremlin flushed out this weekend? Haven't read the threads on disabling ABS, but is this a problem there too?

Sensor part #?

Ran into an interesting issue - tried to get a replacement front wheel speed sensor but 3 different parts stores have it available only as part of the front hub. Fortunately the hubs feel fine but does anyone have a part # for the front ABS/wheel speed sensor?

Trying the dealer tomorrow....

Thanks for the info guys. Here in Canada I've only been able to find the sensor at the dealer - as part of the hub everywhere else.

Plugged the new sensor into left side, turned on key - lights still on. Tried right side - lights still on. ****.

Sorry its still goofed up. I too would be interested to know why the you can't get 4WD when the ABS & brake lights are on.
If you find out, let us know.

EDIT: Just noticed your other post.

ABS & Brake lights - FIXED

Forgot to update this, but replacing the sensor in the rear diff resolved the problem. 4WD now works as well, although I still don't have the slightest clue why Dodge chose to prevent 4WD from engaging when the ABS system is malfunctioning - it's not a traction control system, so what's the issue?

While removing the old sensor from the diff, I broke it into 2 pieces. It's made that way buy not really supposed to separate; however, once it was apart the corrosion on the copper was obvious. At least I knew that once I had the new sensor in (put a little grease on the O-ring) the problem would be fixed. Since the sensor has small openings in the top that can allow moisture in, I sealed it off with some marine silicon.

Because if you put it in four wheel drive when the rear wheels are in motion while the front are not it will cause gear clash in the transfer case. You lost the input from your wheel speed sensor in the rear so it could not see how fast the rear wheels were turning. Its funny that that is built into the electric four wheel drive switch but not the manual. I guess that the reason for it is that if you grind the gears you will know it. If the electric motor grinds the gears it won't.

On my 06 when my abs and brake lights are on the dash, I can still get into 4x4. Here's how, at a full stop, in neutral, foot on brake, shift into 4low let it do its thing then shift into 4hi. This is electronic 4x4 switch... hope this helps you guys and gals in a bind
