99 2500 Just Died Out Of Nowhere
I am extremely new to diesels, so let me get that out of the way My girlfriend has a 99 2500 4x4 CTD the only mods she has so far is a 4 in flowmaster turboback and K&N cold air. We started out fine today, drove to smokey mountains and drove around for around 3-4 hours and everything was fine. As we were driving back to our house, the truck just died. Coasted to a stop, threw it in park waited for a bit and tried to fire it up and it cranks but refuses to turn over. Now I am new to diesels so I really need some help getting this thing up and running again.

1. How many miles has she gone on that tank? I had my fuel level sender go out on me, and I ran out of fuel.
2. If there is fuel in the tank, check the fuel filter canister. If no fuel is in there, you need a lift pump.
3. If there is fuel in the Canister, check all fuses.
4. If all above is good, you might possibly need an injection pump.
Let us know.

1st thing, are you sure there is Diesel in the tank?
Tank level sending units are notorious for giving wrong readings on the fuel guage.
2nd, how is the fuel filter? It needs to be changed every 10-15,000 miles.
Above are cheap/easy, confirm those, then we'll move on to the less easy and certainly not cheap.

We just put about 15 gallons of fuel in this morning before we left. So there should be fuel in there even if the sensor was bad. Fuel Filter was changed on the last oil change which was only 2,500 miles ago. I will have to check the fuel filter canister tomorrow, since it is getting dark out. All the fuses are good, checked those and reset the ECU. About how much does a LP cost, as well as a injection pump. The truck only has 70k miles on it and does not tow anything. Thank you again

If this thing just stopped cold with no warning I wouldn't think it would be a problem of starving for fuel, When I've had these problems it was usually preceeded by low power or spuddering out. The easiest way I found to check for fuel delivery is to just go to the first cylinder, crack it open and bump the starter. If no fuel leaks out of it there is a problem in the fuel lines somewhere. This is easier than messing with the cannister on these 99's. If the lift pump were bad it will still run just low on power so the only thing you are relly checking for here is that fuel is getting to and from the Injector pump. The only field expedient way to do that is if fuel will push through the cracked injector line.

Well I see on the new cummins it is 7 year and 100,000 mile but I don't know if that applies to 99's or not. Also if the warranty is valid, will the dealership care about the mods that are on the truck?

I believe your warranty is only 5 year 100,000 miles. Thats all mine was. Just incase it gets warrantied ditch the K&N. Even if it isn't under warranty ditch the K&N. They are bad news and not to be used on our pickups. I'd look at the fuel filter and try replacing it even though it was just replaced. It only take one bad tank of fuel to plug a filter. Check for any codes. Flip the key on, off, on, off, on but dont start. In the mileage window should be some codes.

what Erksnow said. died at 60 mph while accelerating out of a construction zone. Luckly had enough room and momentum to coast to the side of the road. But signs that the ip was going bad.

Well it's on it's way to a Cummins mechanic that I know of that works for Pilot since I work for them also. I checked the fuel filter canister and there was very very little fuel in it. I am hoping it's just the LP and not the IP. I am very new to diesel, this is the first one I have even touched so kind of sketchy about swapping things out on my own plus my apartment complex won't let me work on cars in their parking lot.

My 2000 RAM 2500 also died last night on my way home from a fishing trip. I had been on the road about 10 hours with 1 fuel stop, and was only 24 miles from home doing about 70 mph and it died on the freeway.
I've had it in the shop twice in the past month. First time there was a computer connection problem behind the cluster. I lost all my guages and all the idiot lights came on but, the truck still ran. A week later I was loading up supplies from my shop and it wouldn't start, not even a click on the starter. Had headlights & radio but I cleaned the cable connections anyway. Turned out to be that the starter went bad without warning. . . . .
I just sent my truck on a flat bed to the dealer, we'll see what happens tomorrow

if the it is the lift pump......aware him of the new style lift pump cummins just came out for the older model engines.........if possable have him install a lift pump from the peterbuilt with the cummins motor......they come with a adjustable line preassure adjuster which is better in the long run because i would up the preassure to about 18 PSI idle to help with performance mods later on down the road.... the tractor style lift pump was like 210.00 i beleave
