friends truck i am working in is not charging. new batt.s new alternator. tested good .alternater putiing out 35-40 v. cables apper good grounds are good still gage reads 10 volts . truck will run shut it off batts are dead have to jump again , belt is good 98.5 2500 4x4 reg cab all stock 24valve

Is the alt fuse good under the hood ?

Yes, check the large fuse on inside of large box, left side. Should see 14 volts at batteries when running. JMHO

Has anyone changed an oil filter lately? Its real easy to accidentally touch the + terminal on the alternator and blow that fuse.

I think is a 140 Amp flavor?

When you pulled the Alt. out make sure the plug on the back is on good.

My AC locked up and I ended up taking off the Alt. to loosen the belt--then discovering how to take the belt off the right way. But when i put the Alt. back on the plug was not on properly and caused me to not get a charge. Just an idea...

This is the best picture I can find right now. The fuse is in the black plastic box on the fender well just to the rear of the driver's side battery. I keep a spare in the truck, along with all of my other goodies. Scroll down so you can see figure 27.
