97 ram a/c problems!!

i have a 97 dodge ram sport and a lil while my a/c only started blowing out of the bottom no matter where the **** is set at, no defrost, no middle, just at ur feet. Read on a couple of other threads that is could be something to do with a vacuum and a plunger under the dash, how do i get to it? just want it to blow out the middle vents, i'm in georgia and ice cold feet do nothing
thanks very much

There are numerous write ups about this. First thing I would check is under the hood for vacume leaks. Does the cruise control still work? If so, probably not a leak under the drivers battery box, but this is probably the most common place for a leak.

So follow all hoses under the hood starting at the vacume pump and make sure they are good. Look under the rubber seal where the firewall meets the hood (cowl) that seal just pulls off. Check all hoses and connections there for leaks or lose connections.

Next is to go inside. It's time to start pulling the dash bezel to get at the back side of the heater/ac controls. You have lots of hoses going to the back of that. They are color coded for function. Hope someone can post that info. You can bypass the switch and see if the vacume activates various vacume servos. You have 3 or 4 vacume servos and the diaphram can rot out due to oil being sucked into the system.

There was a recall for the oil problem (I think), and the the servo right at you your foot on the center hump is the most common one to fail. You can reach it without removing the dash, but it is tight. You can actually activate it by hand while the truck is running (feel up there) and see if that is your problem. I would probably do that before taking anything apart. That is the only one you can get to without removing the dash. Not sure who carries a replacement.

If that is not your problem, and leaky connections behind the switch is not your problem, then double check the control **** to make sure it is not stripped and just turning without activating anything. Lastly, if this is not your problem, then it is a leak in the lines or another servo behind the dash, and that is a big job.

Sorry, ran thru that fast, in a hurry. KD

I use a hand pump to check for vaccum leaks, they can be bought at any parts store. They also can be used to bleed brakes comes in pretty handy doing this because you don't need anybody to pump the brake pedal.
