97 CTD SLT 4X4 -- oil leak question

I just bought the truck in the subject of this message last weekend. I am going through it solving the many problems. One of them is teh waterfall I have on the driver's side of the engine.

This truck leaves puddles wherever it goes. It's worse than a British motorcycle. The side and bottom of the engine are covered along with the left side of the front axle.

I am not 100 convinced it is all oil. I checked the fuel lines and they appear to have been changed and bone dry. The top of the injector pump is wet. Any common leaks there?

The previous owner put a large conical air filter on it and a 4" exhaust all the way back. The exhaust is a straight pipe with no resonator or muffler. He also said he had the fuel pump "turned up". I asked what that meant and he said "stock it was at 26psi and I had it turned up to 40psi." I am not clear what that meant.

I am wondering if the oil is coming from the breather hose. Would these mods cause excessive blowby? Without touching the exhaust or air filter can I put the fuel system back to stock?

Anyone seen leaks on an injector pump?

TIA,

Bob

Its hard to answer with a combination of your terms [ waterfall ] and lack of info , [ 100% ? oil ] .
That leaves too many options of what it could be to start , you need to determan what is the fluid to start looking for the leak .
Wash off the eng. to look for fresh leaks to help to find .
Watch your levels to see whats getting low .

I agree, we don't have enough info to help here. You could be getting a lot of blow-by, but if that was the case the engine would be worn out and require a rebuild.
The pump info you mentioned doesn't sound right. You have 2 "fuel pumps". One is the "lift" or "transfer" pump, which moves the fuel from the fuel tank to the engine, or rather the injector pump (the other fuel pump). The lift pump is the one that should put out about 26 psi when stock. You don't hear of people doing much to these because they only supply the injector pump with fuel, and do a very good job of it. The Injector pump is the one people usually "turn up", but there isn't really a pressure going from 26 to 40. It would be more like 19,000 psi to some higher amount, but there are a bunch of modifications you can make to that pump that would count as "turning it up". You need to know what exactly was done to the pump to figure out how easily it can be taken back to stock. If you were to try it both ways I'm sure you'd rather keep what you have now though. If you keep your foot out of it you can still enjoy good fuel mileage, unlike when you modify a gas engine.

Take a look at this link: http://www.dieselram.com/forum/ubbth...e=1#Post228161

That sounds exactly like what I am experiencing. What is the afc housing? Anyone have a picture handy?

I see wetness on top of what is called the high pressure fuel injection pum ij this picture: http://www.dodgeram.org/tech/dsl/Fac...ocations-l.gif

I am a mechanical engineer and I work on gas cars for fun in my spare time. This is my first diesel and first Dodge trunck. It's a whole new world so I am learning. I appreciate the help.
