96 dodge ram, 12v
my buddy has a 96 with about 250k miles fo there abouts. he lives in fort wayne IN, and works for chevy there. hes thinking about selling his 12v and buying a new d-max. if you could tell him anything, what would it be?
i would love to buy it, a little body work, nothing major, some cleaning, and you would have a great truck. but i just got my 3rd gen. cant afford it.
its a auto, 4x4. runs just how you would expect a 12v to run

Yeah, sounds kinda like my friend with an 03 Tundra. My friend works at Toyota and he sees all the new model Tundras coming in, so he gets tempted to buy a new one. This is what I tell him. Tell your friend to spend $2000 cleaning up the truck. Maybe paint it and get it re-upholstered, fix any little body damage, etc. Clean the engine compartment and the underside and make the whole truck look new again. Spend a few grand on a new torque converter, valve body, and other mods like fuel plate, gsk, and injectors.
After all that, I bet he'd like his truck better than a new Duramax and would thank you for keeping him from emptying his bank account. For under $7000 he could fix up his truck and have a lot of fun with it versus spending $50,000 on a new, but worse, truck.
Check out my old truck that I fixed up. Maybe you can give him an idea about how new he could make his old truck look.

My daughter recently bought a Duramax to replace her 96 Dodge. She tows ALOT and the first time she towed with the Chevy she started complaining how it wouldn't pull a flat trailer with two large bales on it faster then 60mph through rolling hills. The Dodge spoiled her, she could maintain 70mph pulling loaded 28ft horse trailers through the mountains. She isn't singing the Chevy's praises any more.
If she told him anything it would probably be "Don't do it" and she was/is pretty upset with the maintenance cost of the Dodge to boot.

If he likes throwing away money and having the newest ride in town, with a good warranty, go and buy a brand new truck.
For me, I'll keep on driving mine which is at a very flat point in it's depreciation curve. Practical isn't always "cool" in many people's minds. Oh-well...

not doubting her and not looking for an argument, im just curious how a 180hp (or was it 160?) truck outpulls a 360hp truck.

A 96 CTD would have 180hp with an auto, 215hp with a manual. She may not have purchased an 06 D-max, either.

My dad bought a new D-max in July and I noticed the same thing. Without a trailer it would run circles around my truck (339hp), but hook it up to a trailer and it wouldnt touch mine. It seamed to lose hp with more weight. I would just put extra money in the dodge like everyone else says.

oh god not that video.
still even 215hp would be against a minimum of 300/520, but oh well not worth arguing.

Empty the two trucks seemed to have similar acceleration to 60.
It is a 2002 Duramax and as far as I know still stock.
