96' auto tranny questions???
I have a 96 4x4 with an auto tranny. I have owned several dodge cummins in the past 10 years but this is my first with the auto tranny. I am pretty ignorant when it comes to transmissions!! I bought the truck about 8 months ago from the original owner, it had 72,000 original miles and he was meticulous with the maintenance on this truck (he gave me a notebook full of all the records). He had never had anything done to the tranny except routine filter and fluid changing. I have recently began to notice problem with it though. Several times now while stopped at an idle, when I take off it has "shuttered" then stalled. I put it in neutral start it right up and take off.
I have started paying a lot closer attention and have noticed that when it does it I will feel a slight "jerk" in the transmission while at a stop in 1st gear and when I take off it will start the shuttering and trying to stall. When I have noticed this the last couple of times I just put it it neutral or park and then shift to drive and it takes off fine!?!? Do you have any idea what this might be? The truck now has 83000 miles on it!! Any ideas or thoughts would be greatly appreciated!!

It sounds like the TC is trying to lockup while your stopped in gear. What could happen is your torque converter is trying to lockup at idle, there isn't enough pressure to do it, but when you start to accerate the pressure increases and locks the converter, then it stalls.
Just my theory.

What would ya recommend that I do? If that is the problem is that a pretty easy fix or quite invovled?? Having read alot of the threads that have been posted on automatic transmissions, there is alot of talk abuot the "bands" being tightened on the transmission. Could that be a possible problem??
Thanks!!

What is your idle at, in gear with the AC on? It may just be that the idle needs to be turned up slightly. They have a small screw on the throttle stop that can be adjusted. It should be at around 750-800 RPM. It sounds to me like mine did at around 75000 miles when it would stumble and stutter and shut down on take off if I let off the throttle quickly.
