95 12v questions

Okay just picked up a 95 12v auto for 2500 bucks i think i got a good deal but does have its problems first off has 215 on the clock
1. Tranny wont shift into overdrive guy who had it thought it was a pinched wire?
2. Like most dodges steering is sloppy. Someone said you could tighten the gear box i personaly havnt heard of this
3. 4wd isnt working guy said it was the actuator on the axle?
Any help would be appreciated greatly new to diesels an this is my first also any tips and pointers about it would be a help too
Thanks
Connor

1.Do a search on TPS (trottle positioning sensor)
2.You can tighten the gearbox with nut on top but I bet thats not what it needs. Probably needs ball joints and tie rods,Trackbar. Jack truck up so front tires are 1" or so off ground then put a big pry bar under tire and pull up if any movement you need ball joints then grab the tire and try to move it side to side if any movement you need tie rods. Have someone crank on the steering wheel while you look for movement.
3.4x4 not working could be a vacuum leak, crawl under truck at the actuator should to vac. lines red and white (i think) they maybe off or cracked.

mileage wud be the least of my worries as far the engine is concerned. the rest of the truck however wud depend on its maintenance history

IWhat rpm is it idling at? If its idling about 500 rpm tll seem pretty rough. Check that you may need to adjust it. Also check ur fuel pressure.

It should be idling at around 750. You need to find the source of your oil leak- if you dropped the dowel pin (educate yourself on the KDP, if you haven't already), it needs immediate attention.
It sounds like your truck needs some attention, but I would be optimistic and say that you still got a deal. This is a fantastic site to learn and resource about your truck. Welcome!

FWIW, a loose steering box will exibit the same symptoms as bad tie rods, including the pry bar check trick- you actually need to look under the front end and see where the play is when moving the wheel. the Death Wobble will present as well with a worn steering box- I have that exact issue now- new tie rods, new track bar and lots of play in the box.

Do you have proper venting controls? These will be the first things that go out with a vacuum leak. Next will be cruise control and 4x4 actuator (brake light, too.)

I lost all of the above, and fixed it by plugging off the venting vacuum line, restoring vacuum to cruise control and 4x4. Now I just manually change over the venting with a zip-tie on the duct valve under the dash.

I also had much better performance after adjusting idle up to 700+ in gear (braked) with air conditioning on.

im new owner of 94 3500 atuo 122k - had it two mo i fixed my loose steering too with moog ball joints (much better then oem)and wheel bearings. When ur under front end grab and twist the steering shaft and look to see if the sector shaft coming out of steering box moves side to side alittle if its not leaking from the seal you can maybe get bye with a steering brace after fixing all other loose things 1st. The brace is easy to install-45min ($119 from custom diesel) it will be cheaper then new steering box and i think it may be better then tightning the screw down on the steering box. Look for possible cracks between bolts that mount the steering box to the frame too. the brace will help keep the box solid and extend the life left in it. I also lost my overdrive too and been long strugle figuring it out -start with sensors and conections, tps1st trans temp, ect mine i think is the o/d solinoid that is in the valve body . valve body must come down to get the bolt out that holds the plastic plug that goes through the case out. Im taking it it to a friends trans shop to have him replace o/d and lock up soliniods pac(a 2 piece unit) flush-filter-adjust the 3 bands next week i hope that does it. you can ck the volts of the tps and its operation search it on the forums. Hopes this helps the forums are the best place to find info !! hope it goes well!!
