95 12v 4x4 (attn Infidel)

I went for a road trip today (put 1021 kms on) to check out a 95 4x4 , auto , reg cab, with a slide in dump bed.

Now i have a couple questions, it was cold when it was first started , and all i could muster speed wise was about 85 kms/hr (that's 45 or 50 mph i beleive) because it wouldn't shift into the next gear, i know this was because it was cold, but i know in the 94 i used to drive , without o/d it was possible to muster 100-110 kms/hr ( 60-65 mph) Even when (i think) o/d kicked in , it still didn't feel like it did in the 94, i am used to lockup dropping at least a couple hundred rpm's or more. I did managed to get the truck up to about 85 mph on a straight stretch , and IIRC it was turning in the range of 2200-2500 rpm.

Does this sound like a truck that has had 4.10 gears put in it? under the hood said 3.5 axle ratio... 4x4 worked flawless , does not appear to have a (funcional at least) LSD rear end.

I can get this truck for 12 500 CAD which is like 8k us i think, with 138 000 miles , and a hydraulic slide in dump bed (worth approx 4500-5500 $ i beleive)

Whats everyones opinion on this? Does it sound like some sort of tranny problem , because i never felt the harsh lockup , or does this sound like 4 10 gears?

i dunno what ur complaint is exactly....but in thr winter mine wont lockup and therefore go into OD either when cold initially....maybe the timing on this one has slipped some over the years....the throttle cable could be stretched over time....maybe ur other truck wasnt stock and had some gov springs or a plate

one of the things i forgot to do when buying the truck was to thoroughly look under it to look for corroded steel lines and worn out rubber hoses....especially up north here....thats not anyones fault it will just prepare u when fuel or brake lines crack (mine)

I should have mentioned this was an american truck that has been imported, the other truck was STOCK for sure (94), every auto CTD i have driven had a much harsher lockup than this truck, and it was fully warmed up after my 35 minute test drive , it only took a couple of mins driving at the slower speed before it would shift the rest of the gears.

At 110 kms an hour it was turning roughly 2200 rpm , IIRC the 94 i drove turned 1900 2000 at that speed.

I am not complaining here , i just asked if this sounded like a transmission problem ( no lockup?) or if this seemed more like someone had swapped in 4.10 gears.

when u hit the go pedal in the final gear did speed and rpms go up together? or did the rpms just jump?....i mean it should be pretty obvious when u have lokcup and when u dont

could be a TPS issue...maybe he has a ton of those tranny additives to smoothen out lockup...i mean i use dexron.mercon3 for 2 years now and the thing is crisp...when i tried addign a bottle and ahalf of the lucas tranny stuff i could barely feel lockup...i got worried that its slipping or something and changed it...felt rather mushy

some people do swap gears but thats not a fun job....so id say u still have th 3.5's like ur hood says

I don't think that the truck has 3.5 , i seriously think it has 4.10's , the speeds don't make sense, 85 before lockup? i should have been able to hit 100-110 at full throttle...

85 mph at 2200 rpms sounds to me like OD locked with 3.5 rear and stock sized tires.
Truck sounds like an excellent deal.

This truck had 215's on it (sickening i know)

It just didn't feel like the 94 i drove with 3.5's in it. I never thought to try counting the shifts. And i didn't have time to jack it up and spin the tire while counting the turns of the driveshaft.

If someone with 4 10's and an auto would chime in it would be much appreciated.

Thanks infidel , i knew you would have some sort of sensible answer , you always do when it comes to CTD's , not to mention 95's , since you have 2 of them.

put the truck in nuetral and roll it. Mark what a part of your tire for referrence and see how many revolution your pinion turns for each revolution of the tire. I don't know if you have access to the truck to do this but it will be the easiest way to find out what gears you have.

I have 4 10's with auto and 285 tires, @75 mph it's turning about 2400 rpm

Well i'd say that settles that , it's got 215's on it and it was only turning 2300-2400 at 85 mph , so i think i am safe to say it doesn't have 4 10's, either way i don't think i could turn the truck away for that, it's the only thing i didn't like about it. It has the normal faded paint, i only managed to find 2 dents , both could probably be repaired with PDR.
