My buddy is looking at getting a 94 cummins 4x4 auto. Hadn't been started up or driven in a while, and it had some trouble shifting from 1st to 2nd to drive. Could this be a lack of servicing that new ATF would fix or are we talking about clutches? Any other notable problems that can be spotted right away with the motor?

The price better be right if it's having trans troubles right off the bat. Based on the fact that the stock auto trannies have sucked until very recently (like 04.5 and up), I'd say that you can safely assume it'll need a rebuild. Check to make sure it's not low on fluid, but other than that, it looks like a rebuild may be needed. Not to say that he shouldn't get the truck, just that the current owner needs to not have visions of dollar signs dancing in his head considering the age of the truck and apparent condition of the transmission.
