94-97 and 98-02 NV4500 Changes

Other than the shift tower design between the years, any other changes that will hold be back from swapping in an older tranny? I lost my 5th gear yesterday, so a member on here has a tranny out of a 94 that I'm planning on swapping in to get me on the road again. Can the shift towers just be swapped out as well? I'm not a huge fan of the feel of the older trannies, especially compared to my short shift. But I'll definitely take it over no OD.

the 5th gear nut was redesigned in '98 (somewhere in '98, not all trucks). so, if youre getting an older tranny just beware that the nut isnt as good as the '98 and post years....'good' is just a relative term though

a different source i read the somwhere in '98, but QUAD posts it as '99 and newer years... http://www.quad4x4.com/Dodge%2094-04%20NV4500.htm

the one peice shift tower is the whole top cover isnt it? Either way I think swapping the top covers should be no trouble.

Must be 99, because I just lost 5th in my truck. I'm swapping in the older unit, rebuilding mine, and then swapping it back in.

When I was getting a tailshaft seal for my truck, there was 3 different sizes for the NV4500. The dealer narrowed it down to 2 after I gave them my VIN. Is the tail shaft the same size and spline count between all the years? I could swap my tailshaft housing onto the older unit if the seal ID is wrong, but I'd be screwed if the shaft size is different.
