746.4 Miles on one tank

I had to drive from PA to GA yesterday, I wasn't in a hurry, so I drove the speed limit or 5 above the whole way (with a few short bursts). My goal was to make it to the Greenville, SC area (a spinx station that sells B20). I coasted in on fumes, but I made it. A 6 hour span without stopping helped, I'm shocked my bladder made it that long.

When I topped off before I left, I literally filled it to the brim. When I filled up in SC, I filled it to the brim, again, to make sure the mpgs were calculated correctly.

The worst part is that it took 3 credit card transactions to fill up due to the $75 limit.
Here's the breakdown:
15.961 + 15.961 + 3.192 = 35.114 gallons
746.4 / 35.114 = 21.25 mpgs

That length rivals my Jetta TDI, which has made the same stretch...but avg'd 51+ mpgs.

I love diesel vehicles.

The return won't be as good, as I'll be hauling a fridge, queen bed, and other misc stuff.

Wow, that's good mileage. What was the speed limit, 55 or 65? (Sorry, not familiar with that area.)

Nice!!

The first trip I made with my '06 was from Southeastern PA to Elkins, WV towing a 7000lb TT.

On the return trip I made it home on 1 tank, and that was pulling through the mountains. On the trip down, I was tagging with another guy and he had a gasser, so we stopped 3 times for him to fill up.

Not sure of the miles, but it was over 500, and towing, I was impressed. That was with less than 1500 miles on the odo.

Thats about as bad as this guy that brought his truck into the shop a while ago. He had a hole cut in the floor and a bottomless porta-potty over top. Talk about a nasty, stinkin truck. I refused to bring his truck into the shop so he reported me to Volvo NA. I dont care how many calls I get from Volvo, that thing would never come in.

Speed limit varied by state, anywhere from 60-70, with a few 40-55 spots for construction.
According to my GPS, my 'moving avg' was 64.1mph for the entire trip.

I did have an empty snapple bottle handy, for a traffic jam or other emergency.

Also, I got sun burn on the left arm (aka Red Neck Trucker Tan). I got my driver & passenger windows tinted yesterday at 35% (legal limit).

Exit 56, right near the Greenville/Spartanburg Airport (GSP), Hwy/Rt 14 exit.
Their price for B20 is always the same as D2. It was $4.69 on 6/11/08.

(I used to live just a few miles from there)

If you happen to miss that Spinks Station there is another one at exit 44 (white horse road).

JustLuckey, what in the world possessed you to move from the Greenville area to NE PA? I moved the other way from N Jersey to Greenville area.

BTW, my personal best has been 701 miles on a tank.

Wow, that's so cheap. I'll stop there when I come down for a looksee in the fall.

Thank you.

I too have a TDI Beetle that gets 810 miles to a tank and my CTD gets 806 miles with the tank vent mod. However, the TDI fill up with only $79 whle the CTD takes $188 @ $5.09/gallons.

I just returned from PA (Hazleton area) to GA. I make that drive 3 -4 times a year. I fill up at home then refill after I get home.

I moved up to NE PA because that's where I grew up and missed the snow. Greenville/Spartanburg is a nice area, especially with the upgrading they've done in downtown Gville.

My return trip wasn't as good, as expected. I fell about 30 miles short of getting home and had to get a couple gallons of expensive PA diesel to make it back safely. My trip odo read 723 when I pulled in to the station. I won't know my mpgs because the wife filled it up and doesn't top it off like I do (probably because it takes 10-15 mins to pump, wait, repeat).

Still happy with 21+ mpgs & 700+ miles per tank.

Pro-NRA (me too, by the way), how the heck did you get 800 miles out of your CTD? I drove like a grandma and couldn't hit 750. Tonneau? Chip? Draft? I must know.

JustLuckey, I was just kidding you. My mom lives near Montrose PA and I make the trip up to visit her at least once a year. But usually in the summer. My kids and wife and I love the 4th of July parade in downtown Montrose. I don't miss the snow at all.
