How does this kit work out? I seen it was in the 85 dollar range. What all is needed? I am wanting to dump the 3.07 and go to a lower gear for low end grunt and would like to maintain the same or lower rpm at highway speeds. Want to go to 4.10 if possible since my truck is a plow truck I prefer not to wake the customers up getting into it with the 3.07's [laugh] What is the final drive ratio with the 518 and engine rpms say at 65 mph with 3.54,3.73, and 4.10 gearing.. all that stuff confuses me [dummy]

The 518 has a .69:1 over drive, but is still a non lockup. As far as how much the "kit" costs, I don't know what kit you are talking about. You may be able to upgrade your transmission, but more likely you need to get a 518. ALso, your transfer case will be moved back some and may require different drivelines. Gears, well, if you have 235-265 tires on it I would do 3.55 or 3.73 if you drive on the street. If you have 285 or larger do 4.10.

Try plowing in low range. I do it in my '90 - works out great

The 727 and 518 have the same exact ratios for the first three gears but the 518 has the OD. My guess is you've been looking at the lockup conversion kits for the gasser transmissions on PATC. If you want OD you need an entire diesel OD transmision, if you use the diesel non lockup OD trans. you keep the engine to transmission adapter you have and the driveshaft will have to be shortened. If you go with a diesel lockup OD trans. you also need the lockup engine to transmission adapter and starter, the driveshaft will have to be shortened as well.
