I'm wondering what kind of times you 6spd guys are turning. This is my first post so bear with me. Please list mods.

Thanks!

Depressing to say, but I ran a 17.6 @ 78 this past weekend. A buddy of mine with another 6 speed, with an intake and exhaust system, ran a 17.5. The autos are about 1/2 second faster.

banshee,
I wasn't quite sure why you were depressed about a 17.6 until I read your signature. Admittedly your new truck is not in the same league as your old one but, I'll bet it will be a lot cheaper to hit 497 hp with your new one than it was with your old one ;).

According to my G-Tech, mine runs 16.1 @ 89 MPH consistantly. This spring I'll actually run it at the track and see what kind of numbers I get.

My SO 5 speed ran a 18.02 at 74, with exhaust and intake and 315/70/17 tires. Good news is that I run a 14.31 at 93 now. Now for the better than that news, I ordered a TST box! Wife is gonna let me get a dual disk clutch too. ;D All I had to do was remodel the kitchen. :P

Thanks guys, I will be ordering a new truck some time in next couple of months. Still can't decide on the trans. I want to go fast but I really want a manual. :'(

Buy a Race car if you want to do fast. THEY ARE MADE TO PULL NOT TO RACE.

I had a race car, now I have a Jeep. I can't have both so I want a quick tow rig-and I will have a quick tow rig. I have seen fast diesels at the track and they are awesome.

BTW "BulletMan"- I WILL BUY WHAT I WANT FOR WHATEVER REASON I WANT!

IWant1,

If you're more interested in drag racing then get the auto... no questions. For a given hp level the auto is always going to be 1/2 - 3/4 sec faster in the quarter. However, getting the auto "bulletproofed" is going to cost a lot more than the 6 speed. The auto will need TC, VB, billet shafts, extra clutches, controller, deep pan, temp gauge, and other internal mods... about $5k worth when it's all said and done. The 6 speed needs a clutch... that's it. Even the strongest dual disk runs only ~$2K, so you're going to be saving a lot of money on tranny mods (to put towards hp mods :) ). Look at Swayse's setup.. he's in the low 14s now with a fairly mild bomb setup, and he'll be deep into the 13s with the TST box. Sure, the auto would be faster, but you just have to decide how fast is fast enough (okay... that might not have an answer), and are you going to be okay with shifting.

Boss Hog,

I tell ya... it's a big step when ya go from smokin' everyone to getting smoked by everyone [laugh]. Getting the hp on the 3Gs is probably going to be a little cheaper, but not much. I'll save on the tranny mods, though :).

I am just giving you guys crap. From what I understand when to Bomb the Diesel you don't get that great of fuel mileage. So why not buy a gasser save 4,500 and through a Supercharger on it and you would blow away a Diesel. You would have a lot less money in the truck.

Thanks banshee, I will most likely go with the sixer. If I could run low 14s I would be more than happy(for awhile ;)).

banshee,
OK, I guess its time to own up and tell the truth. I did try mine on 2 Aug 03 at the Bradenton FL drag strip. They had a diesel only event. I need to say the following in real small letters (19.1 @ 77.1 with a 3.2 60 ft.) :-[ The first run I left in 3rd at about 2500 rpm and spend the next half hour spinning the tires. The second run I left in third at 2000 rpm and the truck simply burned the clutch until I let off the throtle. Not wanting to embrass myself further, I quickly tucked my tail between my legs and left. :P It is very obvious to me that racing these things is a lot harder than my old '69 Roadrunner.

You would probably crap your pants if you know how much money and time that guy put in the truck. I could go out tomorrow and buy a GMC Cyclone and walk the dog on that truck and have a lot less money in the truck. Just my point of view. What kills me is when some people race a Hemi with a stock Diesel and can't figure out why they lost.

I've found that from a rolling start, our rigs will beat just about anything on the road. Especially on the highway....you can really hear a car scream if it tries to pass you on the right and you don't let them over because they were tailgating you.

Boss Hog,

Don't feel bad! My first run was a 18.2 (spun/hopped off the line), and my next was a 18.4 (hit 3rd instead of 5th). After that I started lauching in 2nd 4wd, and it seemed to work the best. My best 60' was 2.4... I need to work on that.

Swayse,

How are you launching to get those 1.9 60' times? That's impressive....

BulletMan,

Every diesel I've ever bombed has actually increased fuel mileage with the mods. My old truck made 200 hp stock and got a best of 18mpg, but I could get 20mpg when it was cranking out 500 hp. Those hemis absorb gas stock... I can't imagine how bad they'd be modified. I'm also curious how long they'll last when modified.

I agree with some above , get a drag car if you really want some fun, Check out my site and you can see my addiction.(see sig.)
I do look forward (new 600 on order) though to passing the fords and chevys up the hills pulling my junk to the race track.

Banshee,

Pretty much like you did, 4wd and 2nd gear. I put the throttle to the floor, and when the light turned green let out the clutch. If you let out the clutch too fast you'll bog, gotta find the sweet spot. Stock clutch held up to that for a lot longer than I thought it would. I swear I heard the tires squeak just a little in 4wd once at the strip.

Bulletman,

Guess what? This monster is my farm truck!!! I get to drive it everyday!!!! Make a parts run to town, and race other farmers with diesels at stop lights!!! I've got 32,000 miles on this thing so far and get great fuel milage. Why in the world would anybody wanna buy a fast car that they would never have time to drive?

Bulletman, I guess I did'nt make it clear that I am buying this truck to pull my Jeep. I am not buying this truck instead of a race car. ::)
But I do plan on hitting the track now and then with my buddies.

Put a SuperCharger on a gas motor?!
The price is the same as BOMBing a Diesel, but there's no fun in that.
My 7,200Lb 2wd 3500 ran a 14.3 close to 98MPH. My 6,500Lb 4wd has ran (in 2wd) a best of 13.7 so far.

In the pickup world, I haven't lost to anything on street tires.
In the car world, I haven't lost to a stock anything. modified, yes, but Stock? no. I have even put a C6 on the trailer.

I think these trucks can drag race just about as good as teh rest of them out there. Of course, you have to throw alot out the window like weight transfer, and suspension dynamics, but you ahve to put up with a ton of torque (literally), which takes some finesse to get off the line, and get your hard parts to hold together.
