6.7 Sounded Like a Jet Engine Idling... Tacky

I'm sitting behind this 07 or 08+ quad cab with flatbed on it in traffic, I'm guessing it has the 6.7 on it? I dunno, maybe it was a chassis cab setup.

I'm like "What the heck is that god awful noise?"

It literally sounds like a Jet engine at the airport, I have the windows rolled up and can't even here the radio inside the truck it was that bad. Roll the windows down, and its a freakn airport.

I roll up to the right, 18yr old kid on his cell phone, look at the exhaust, there is none, just a pipe....

What is going on here to make that god awful noise? Variable Van turbo straight piped?

I heard a F-RD the other day the same, I could hear it 1 block away, it was that loud idling, I'm really surprised these people haven't been ticketed yet.

I'll get flamed for this, but all I can say is:

-- its annoying
-- its to dang high tone peircing loud
-- I like straight pipes on the 5.9, but that is NOT the sound a Cummins makes
-- dude is giving all the other diesels a bad name

Do you realize how much time and energy most people in this forum have spent to make what you call "god awful jet engine noise" even louder??

it could be a exhaust whistle, very popular with the young and young at heart, right now.

quote "dude is giving all the other diesels a bad name"

Since you brought this up...... I would like to see that the people who purposely "smoke out" other drivers to be mindful that when you do this it gives all of us a bad name. Wanna smoke em.... take it out somewhere where there isn't anyone else around.

I dont particularly care for what I call the Hairdrier on steriods sound. I rather that deep bellow. Im not sure what was going on with the truck. I know mine would do it with the EGR plugged in and the EB on. Since I have unplugged the EGR it hasent done it, thankfully. Still kinda "airy" though, but not too bad.

He probably had an aftermarket exhaust and due to the cold weather the E-Brake was activated while he was stopped at the intersection. I hated that sound on the 6.7 I had so I installed a CAT from a 5.9 back into the H&S exhaust and it sounded 100 times better.....

Not so much from the exhaust side but I am going to put stock air box (Intake) back on as soon as I can go and get my stuff from FL. These last few trips cross country have really been annoying inside the truck from turbo whine at 65-70 mph. After driving for 16 hrs I got out and my ears were ringing. Back in the day it might have been cool but Im 48 years old and I just dont like it anymore. Not sure what I will do with the AFE when it comes off but... Just started noticeing it on these trips also, runnin around town doesnt whine as much. Oh well if somebody in the Wichita KS area wants the thing they could get it for free when the time comes. It has only been on the truck since April 08.

I love mine. That is the 6.7 st8 piped with the cat, dpf and muffler gone. It does it when the ebrake is trying to warm up the engine.

It is the exhaust brake. All that is necessary to make it go away is to reach over and shut off the exhaust brake. It is especially noticeable if someone has removed the egr and egr cooler. It will also whistle. Again shutting off the e-brake will make it go away.

My 02 7.3 and 04 6.0 sounded insane straight piped. Start 'em on a cold day and when they kicked into high idle it would give you goose bumps. My wife knew without asking to roll down the passenger window under an overpass...I love that sound!
