I want to hear my turbo whistle when I am pulling. One person told me that if I removed the turbo intake muffler it would make that awesome whistle sound, but a mechanic laughed at me and told me there is no such thing. Is there? Where is it? How can I get the whistle?

Straight pipe the sucker, rip the aribox completely out, and clamp a K&N filter to that little elbow thingy. You'll hear it then.

I have been told that the K&N filters may cause a slight problem in the Canadian winter by sending too much supercooled air into the turbo...right, wrong?? Are they safe?

No comment on the K&N and to much cold air. Should be enought heat around the engine to elimate that. As far as the turbo wine, remove want ever you have in the way of hoses to the air filter box. Install the K&N. Do not over oil the filter. Just a light spray up and down the fins once will do just fine.

With the hoses removed and the K & N installed, you should hear the turbo real good. That would be like removing the snorkle from a Dodge air box. Come to think of it, I never heard a turbo wine from a 6.5 jimmie.

Thank you for your help guys, I am going to swap filters tomorrow night and see what its like. I have heard a 6.5 whistle before and I loved it so I want it too. Is there a horsepower increase from the K&N? There probably would be hey, they should be able to suck a lot more air than the stock fender hole.

Does a flowthrough muffler and bigger exhaust cause any horsepower/mileage gains? Will it do any bad? I don't know much about the diesels, but I have been told that they don't need the backpressure that a gas-job needs. ??? Thanks for all your help guys.

Well if your 6.5 is stock, you should at a minimum get a new aftermarket downpipe from the turbo. The pipe is squashed and crimped to clear the frame rails (for no reason) and costs you about 10% power (I've been told). With a high flow filter, new downpipe and muffler you probably could feel a shot in the pants for power.

And too much cold?? For a non intercooled diesel, such as the 6.5, I would welcome the cold air. The cooler the charge the denser the air = more power!

With the K&N filter, gutted cat, Flowmaster muffler with duals, and stock down pipe, you could tell a difference in the power. Engine really wants to pull now through out the entire RPM range. I've never heard of such a thing as to MUCH cold air. The colder the intake charge, the more dense it is. The denser the charge, the more oxygen there is. The more oxygen there is, the bigger the BOOM there is. The bigger the BOOM there is, the more power you get. ;D

Thanks guys, I'm gonna try that. Have any of you ever used Superchips? Its a programmer and code reader for $500. Canadian that claims 80 hp and 160 ft pounds of tourque on a dodge and 100/180 on a chevrolet. It is supposed to tune the auto tranny for the application also. One button resets it to stock to sell or whatever. Just wondering if they do what they say. Looking for anyway to find more mileage and power. I am only averaging 14 mpg. half loaded, and some city.

Take the Catylitic Converter off, remove the catylist insides stuff, replace onto exhaust system.

Nice flow through with the appearance of staying legal.

The "Cat" plugs up over time resulting in loss of power and high exhaust temperatures.

Not sure on Chevy's or Fords, but the 12 valve Dodges had catylitic converters, perhaps the 24valve California trucks did as well.

Besides the appearing legal thing, leaving the hollow shell on there gives the exhaust a hollow sound. Kinda like a Cobra with an exhaust. Sounds awesome.

Okay thanks, here in Saskatchewan we don't have emmision laws so it doesn't matter what we do. They do frown on super loud though.
How a bout the programmer? Anyone used it before?

Does the Cat seperate once removed or will I have to cut it and reweld after?

I think most that have done it have had to use a big metal bar and repeatedly ram it into the converter to break up all the catylist stuff.
Eventually it will all fall out onto the floor.

Be careful though, it is a known carcinogen, make sure you wear a mask to protect eyes, nose, mouth etc.

Don't know if anyone has cut it open to remove everything, then welded it back together.

Sounds like a lot of work. I may as well just take it off and leave it off if there is no law for it here. Is it a really nice sound with an empty one left on?
Is there any sensors to screw up on a diesel like there is on a gas by removing the cat? ie. 02 sensor, etc. ? Will I start a code popping nightmare?
Still wondering if anyone has used the superchips programmer and if so what there results were.
If the programmer can gain a person an extra 100+- hp why wouldn't the trucks be programmed like that from factory to start with?
