5th wheel bumpers

I was just wondering what people have done to beef up their bumpers to pull doubles. I just purchased a 5th wheel and I am redoing the bumper because I didn't like it. So if anyone has any pics lets see them.

I just installed a separate hitch for an RV that bolts across from each frame rail and doesn't touch the bumper.

x2

You can use the bumper for additional tie-ins, but you need to get to the frame.

I bought a 8 ft piece of 4 inch square and cut off the thin bumper and welded it to the end of the frame where the light duty one was. I then welded a 4 ft receiver tube to the bumper and built a crosspiece that I welded to the other end of the reciever tube and then bolted the cross piece to the frame. I couldn't find a RV receiver to fit my frame width and I needed it to support about 500 lbs as I carry an Onan 5500 generator with battery on it.

I have done this twice to two different trailers, I should say had it done as I am no welder. The first one was travel trailer and we wanted the hitch for a bike rack that went into the reciever hitch. I can say that the 4 inch stock bumpers are no good. The first one was welded to the stock bumper and the weight of the bike rack ripped it off first trip. The guy then put on a thicker 4 inch square tube and ran supports this worked great excpet we could not put anything inside the bumper anymore, to small inside diameter.

I traded recently and bought a 5er and had the "boat hitch" as they called it put on, again for the bike rack. This is nice the way the did it, leaved the bumper completely out. I will take pics tommorrow, at work today, and post them.
