Re:5th gear update

I recently installed a rebuilt tranny in my dads 96 and the rebuilt tranny had the updated 5th gear and the short throw shifter top on it (that I robbed and put on my truck) anyhow ... while I was at the tranny shop I asked how much the 5th gear update cost and if I recall correctly the whole 5th gear assembly cost 165$. However I am thinking that to do the whole upgrade you will need a whole new main shaft that has a groove cut out behind the 5th gear in which a three piece ring assembly is fit in. I could be wrong but if I recall correctly ... on another note you can do your own "5th gear fix" by taking a center punch and a hammer and giving opposite sides of the retaining nut a whack and 90 degrees from that on the shaft two more whacks. I know it doesnt sound too technical but if exicuted correctly it has proven to be very successful 8). Dont forget to take the retaining nut and the gear off first and clean them and apply some red lock tite .
This may not have been what you were looking for but just in case.

Re:5th gear update

I just had 5th go out in my truck and I got the updated nut from the ******* for 42 with tax that included the updated nut spacer and a tube of loc tite. Not too bad I expected worse, you can order the updated nut from piers I believe for around 27 bucks but then you have shipping. You are also supposed to have a special Mopar socket kinda deal to torque that puppy down to 270-280ft/lbs, I did'nt have the socket and my shop was three hours away so I had a shop do it for me, total cost with parts, fluid and labor was 250.

Re:5th gear update

All I can say is this (and Bulthisl will back me up), Dont try and put the fifth gear nut on whith the tranny not in the truck! Unless you have something to hold tranny while you put 300ftlbs of torque on that bad boy!!

Is a very easy job, and any halfwhit can do it. We will help you if you have any questions.

Re:5th gear update

This sounds like something that I need to do. You guys already answered one question and that was to leave it in the truck. What is next. Pull the driveshaft and then the cone on the back of the transmission. It sounds pretty easy but I don't want to screw anything up.
Thanks
Justin

Re:5th gear update

If you run empty and never pull a heavy load in 5th, the cheap nut job is adequate. If you haul a big boat or RV, go to Six States and get the fully splined shaft replacement, that will be the $300 bite!

The way the NV4500 HD is designed, 5th gear sets half off and half on the spline on the OEM shaft when it is engaged. That works fine on an empty truck, but load it up and the gear will lock in 5th, and you will have to shut down and let it cool to get it to release.

Re:5th gear update

Hi all I use a 1500 rpm rule for the 5th gear, i wount pull any load under that range, has worked for me with a bit over 100,000 miles on the truck and the most it has pulled was 17,000# gross , flat and hilly land, the eng acks like a jack hammer under 1500 rpms and this will back off the nut. just my .002 thanks and have a great x-mass ;D
